The Jewish Art Salon is an open and unique inter-disciplinary group of approx. 150 artists, curators and art historians. We have informal meetings once every month to discuss our work, life, the Jewish themes inherent in our work and the multiplicity of impetus and inspiration for our work.
Our members are from all different walks of life: from secular to Chassidic and anything in between, Ashkenazy and Sephardic, from the USA, Israel, India, the Netherlands and Germany.
We have created bridges between people who normally would have no interaction with each other. We have lowered barriers between Jews and we are promoting understanding within the greater Jewish community. We talk about Jewish ideas and culture in the broadest sense, as affirmations as
well as questions. Looking through the lens of our own unique experience of culture, liturgy and experience, is a springboard for discussing important and provocative issues facing our society-at-large.
Together we are creating a grassroots Jewish art community where work and issues are discussed and information and resources are shared. We are accomplishing this through meetings, guest lectures, our e-community, art exhibits, panel discussions and workshops.
Our first exhibition, “Tzelem”, in downtown New York, corralled a diverse and balanced range of Judaic influenced visual expression.
We aim to present a more complete display of what has long been recognized as a strong underground movement in the visual arts. More exhibitions and panel discussions are being planned for the near future; as of date: three at the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art, one at Hartford’s Charter Oak Cultural Center and the JCC.
