The WTCI grew out of the second wave of feminism. In the early 1970s the Women’s Movement was challenging many existing intellectual and social paradigms. A group of psychotherapists, including The WTCI’s founders, formed a study group which came to recognize that an understanding of women’s psychology needed to include, in addition to the insights of psychoanalytic theory, the multiplicity of ways culture impacts the development of personality.
From this group Luise Eichenbaum and Susie Orbach founded The Women’s Therapy Centre in London, a charitable trust (1976). Given the overwhelming response to the London Centre Luise Eichenbaum, Susie Orbach, and Carol Bloom co-founded The Women’s Therapy Centre Institute in New York City in 1981.
In 2010, The Women’s Therapy Centre will celebrate its 28th Anniversary. Our February 6, 2010 celebration will honor all women who are involved in the struggle to live an embodied life. We will also hold a “Speakout”, a time honored traditional forum for women to find their individual voice and share experiences,
More details about the program will be published on this website as they become available.
We hope you will join us on February 6, 2010 at INDWELLING IV: Living in a Female Body: The Project Continues.
