It has been said that if a penny was dropped off the CN Tower and was in free fall (ignore drag and terminal velocity) that it would go right through a human skull. Is this true? How fast does it need to go? How fast would it go?
Blog it.

So, we all watched the video...and we all did the math. We found, using the total distance travelled and the total time, that Michael Johnson ran 10.35m/s. Using that number we calculated how long it should have taken him to run the first 100m. 9.67 seconds is the number most people ran up with. Yet, upon reviewing the video it appears he doesn’t hit the 100m mark until 10.1 seconds.
What happened? Was our math wrong?
Block A, you got off easy by doing it in class. Block C, you had the job of writing your thoughts on your blog.
Here is something I want everyone to think about (Block A, you must respond to this in a blog. Block C, you may choose to add this to your blog if you want):
If he ran the first 100m in 10.1 seconds, what was his average velocity for the first 100m?
What was his velocity for the last 100m? Currently the record for the 100m sprint is held by Usain Bolt at 9.58 seconds. Could Michael Johnson’s last 100m beat this record?
If Johnson and Bolt wanted to cross at the same time, how far back should Johnson be when Bolt begins to run?
Both block A and C must have their blogs written by Tuesday’s morning and you must send me the link (dwoelders@pacificacademy.net).

Welcome to the physics home page. Hopefully you have familiarize yourself with the site and added it as one of your bookmarks. If you have any questions, requests or comments, you can add it in using the link below. Also, if you have any website, images or files that you think would be helpful for other students, please attach it in the comments section as well.
If you have misplaced the syllabus you can find one here.
Another useful place to find all of your electronic files would be to visit my online storage site at https://public.me.com/woelders . Use the password “pa2011”. The navigation should be quite simple.
You may want to spend 5 minutes downloading the DataStudio software on your laptop found at www.pasco.com/support/downloads. This software will be used throughout grade 11 and 12 physics, biology and chemistry.
Also, you will be responsible for going to www.blogger.com and creating your own blog space. You can use your gmail address to register if you have one. If you have a blog site that you are already using, feel free to use that. However, you will need to write academic pieces on it so if it is a themed blog (ie. “My Obsession With Glee Blog”) you might want to create a different one for this purpose. It is probably a good idea to keep your blog anonymous, however, I will need to know the link.

Today’s Task: Login to www.engrade.ca and add Science 10 to your set of courses.
Go to www.blogger.com and create your own blog space.
