I took my car to Dent Sport Garage for some time on their Dyno Dynamics dyno today. I was worried about my engine. The head was recently serviced (shave and valve job) after melting it at a track day. I picked the car up from Apex last week and noticed that the engine didn’t feel right when I pulled the car onto the trailer.
I have a 2-day event with COMSCC tomorrow and wanted to be sure all was OK. I’m glad I made the effort to get to the dyno. The first pull showed the car at about 78hp. Way low! My car has been to the DSG dyno many times, so we were confident that the current tune was good.
We uncovered an odd problem with the timing. The crank pulley (what I call “actual timing”) was very different from what the MegaSquirt was seeing. We synced actual timing to the Megasquirt, but things were still not right.
Since we were running out of time (DSG squeezed me in at the end of the day), we ball-parked the timing by manually turning the CAS and then verified the results through a series of dyno pulls. Fine tuning was done by adjusting the “fudge factor” that syncs the MegaSquirt to actual timing. The end result was 126.4 hp, which is almost exactly what the car was pulling the last time I had it to DSG’s dyno.
I loaded up the car and got home just in time to start packing up the truck in total darkness...
