Crank Scraper Installed...

...almost!

Mike at ABT has spent a lot of time fitting the Ishihara-Johnson crank scraper.  The crank scrapper will reduce power-robbing oil windage around the crank shaft by “scraping” the oil off of the crank as it passes through the oil pan.  The crank scraper’s works similar to a rubber spatula held against the side of the bowl in a cake mixer.  Instead of pulling batter off of the side of a bowl, the scraper will wipe the oil off of the crank.

This is a three piece close-contact scraper.  A teflon sheet is sandwiched between a two part steel frame.  The teflon does all of the scraping and the metal frame is used to keep the teflon in place.

As delivered, the metal frame and the teflon part need a lot of trimming.   This is a time consuming process.  Mike was very careful to trim just enough and not too much material.  When finished, the crank scraper will just barely come in contact with the crankshaft.   When the engine is started for the first time (hopefully soon!), the crank will grind away any little bits of teflon still in the way.  Can’t get much closer than that!  Since the teflon is quite soft, this will not damage the engine but could potentially cause a blockage in the oil filter.  We’ll be changing the first filter or two out very quickly!  Safety first.
