ABOUT BDSQUASH.COM
We love squash. Its a great sport that few people know of - or play - here in Bangladesh. Globally - as well as locally - squash has the unfortunate reputation of being a featured sport of exclusive clubs. We seek to provide opportunities for locals in Bangladesh to access and enjoy the sport as a viable means of recreation. This is tiring given various elements directly impacting our efforts including average income, logistics, government instability, market instability, scarce middle class, lack of member club reciprocity privileges and hostile relationships, investment risk and on and on... In so many sectors, Bangladesh is far behind - sport is no different. Given those variables, we at least wish to be a resource for those who demonstrate talent, skill and motivation to improve their game. We hope to bring a larger, working framework into reality to ‘cast a larger net’. Firstly, we need to get very good at our craft and organize squash locally and establishing a sporting identity.
About the founder
Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Will Mather began regularly coming to Bangladesh in 2005 helping at an orphanage before relocating to the country in 2008. In a series of events culminating in working at the World Junior Squash Championships in Chennai, India, he was appointed National Head Coach of the Bangladesh Squash Rackets Federation (BSRF) in 2009.
Mather is a former decathlete, triathlete, competitive cyclist and two sport collegiate athlete (football, track & field). He later picked up squash while working at Honolulu Club and watching the visiting Trinity Squash Team do an exhibition.
As the new Head Coach, Mather, also a Certified Personal Trainer and Sport Performance Specialist (ACE CPT, NASM CPT, PES), designed a comprehensive squash-specific training camp. The team - the youngest and most inexperienced sent on behalf of BSRF - responded well and went on to earn bronze at the 2010 South Asian Games.
Beyond Bangladesh, Mather is a contributor to the Asian squash scene, often working with the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and Womens Squash Association (WSA) World Tours in addition to various championships organized by the Asian Squash Federation (ASF) and World Squash Federation (WSF). His capacities range from player, coach, referee, photographer and writer. His work has been published worldwide and include the WSF, ASF, Squashsite.com, Squashstars.com, Tecnifibre Rackets, Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia, numerous player websites and more.
Mather serves players of all levels from recreational to professional and has worked alongside some of the game’s great coaches and players, like former British Open Champion Qamar Zaman of Pakistan, Major S. Maniam of Asian Squash Hall of Fame lore, and a slew of current professional players. “I’ve had the pleasure to learn from some of the best. I’ve had the privilege to teach people who’ve never played. I am indebted to them all and am thankful for their time as they helped me shape my game and my ability to teach it,”.
After a tough 2011 where much time was spent in and around the hospital recovering from major ankle surgery and the birth of his daughter, Mather will play smaller events in the region as he approaches the twilight of his playing career before moving into full time coaching and training.
Feel free to contact Will with any questions regarding clinics, seminars, groups sessions, private sessions and personal training. You can reach him on his mobile at 01732330045 or email him at wmather@bdsquash.com. He trains out of American Club in Gulshan, Dhaka, Bangladesh and can be seen riding his bike daily around the city.
He and his wife, Rachal, live in Dhaka and recently celebrated the birth of their first child, their daughter, named Kaimi, in July.
