The Nigerian Dwarf
Originally imported from West Africa in the mid 70’s. The Nigerian was on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) watch list for years but has been moved up to the recovering list since their numbers have increased.
*The Nigerian Dwarf was originally selected as a companion and show animal, with emphasis on the breed’s graceful appearance and gentle disposition. The production qualities of the breed, however, have also attracted attention. Nigerian Dwarf does produce one to two quarts of milk per day. The milk is high in butterfat and makes excellent cheese and butter. Does generally breed year-round and produce twins and often times triplets. They can be milked for up to ten months, but can also be allowed to dry up on their own if milking is no longer desired. These production qualities make Nigerian Dwarf goats good candidates for small scale milk production where a year-round supply of a moderate amount of milk is the goal.
We feed all our does and kids 2nd and 3rd cutting alfalfa hay and they get a custom grain with oats, alfalfa pellets, corn in the winter and a selenium mineral mixed in with dry molasses. Our bucks get 1st cutting hay and 2nd with a little grain during breeding season. Our wethers get 1st cutting and NO GRAIN. I can’t stress enough to never feed wethers grain. They get urinary crystals and it can (and often does) kill them.
Nigerian’s make excellent companion pets, 4-H projects, milkers and weed controllers. They just love that poison ivy! Goats are a herd animal and depend on the companionship of other goats. If this is your first goat please consider getting two. Life for them (and you) will be much nicer as well as quieter!
