Its a mind mapping utility and book marking utility. Click on the map to add a node. Hit Tab to Edit. Drag items from another application to the map,  paste content via normal clipboard methods.

You can assign or automatically assign colors and shapes and layers to your nodes

Links will grow between the nodes where word commonality is found. Word which share a common stem will also cross link

e.g jumps,jump and jumping all link to each other as equivalent terms.

When URL’s are added to the map Web pages show up as thumbnails on the map and the some of the page content cross links to other nodes in your map.

Trout is  designed to show the links between things that you did not know were there and present your data in a non-linear way
