Emily Brooke had spunk. She reminded me of the lead singer for Antigone Rising, except she was considerably taller. At the beginning of her set, she asked the Mansion crowd to step forward so she could feed off their energy. Emily is forward, to say the least. Her band provided a tight foundation to her gritty storytelling and Emily herself was an accomplished guitar accompanist. Middle of Us is about threesome relationships, and she spins a vivid tale of her viewpoints on the matter. Enjoy.

Kyle Lardner - Costa Rica - Crash Mansion

Ahh, the lovely Kyle Lardner, on a Saturday in November at the Mansion. She’s an up and comer but she’s got a great technical handle on keeping time, keeping energy, and keeping interest. At one point during the show she did a seductive upward slide with her back against the microphone stand. This song, Costa Rica, with it’s cheery chorus melody and call-and-answer harmonies, proved her breadth of musical style. In contrast of course, to the song which involved the seductive slide. Catch her shows around town, if you are so inclined.

Armand Aviram - Whipping Boy - Crash Mansion

Armand’s loyal NYU fans came out to the Mansion last Thursday and cheered through his every song. Whipping Boy was the last song in his set and I left both the introductory commentary in the mix, as well as his fans pleading for more. I feel sorry for the Aviram critic attending SUNY Purchase, if he’s ever found that is. Listen to the track to find out what I mean.

myspace.com/haileywojcik - VLounge Records was contracted the day of the performance to record Miss Wojcik from Michigan. Only living in NYC for a couple months she took the Crash Mansion stage like a red-headed cardinal singing to the morning. Hailey strummed three instruments including a uke, a three stringed ‘never play a wrong note’ guitar which was very interesting to the guitar player in me, and an acoustic. She’s a literate, and I’m not positive, but I think her bridge is from the mind of Salinger.

Powder Burn brought the fury. They had the crowd under their command the whole show, loyally singing along to their anthems. Above is the mix I captured in Pro-Tools directly from each mic channel. I then applied appropriate effects to each track so that performance would pop in the right places. Below is the stereo audio from the soundboard, mixed for the audience watching the show. As you can tell, they have totally different purposes.
