About Vince
James Vincent Reilly is his given name but he likes to be called Vince or V.   On September 5, 2008, Vince was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer) in his lower left femur. This site has been set up to record a little bit of the history of Vince’s journey to battle this disease.

Vince was 11 years old when he was diagnosed and turned 12 on the 23rd of January (a little hint of the source of the 23 in V23).  Vince is a local Poway resident where he attended Painted Rock Elementary through 5th grade and now attends Twin Peaks Middle School as a 6th grader.  Vince has one sister, Carlee.  His mom is Vickie and his dad is Jim.  Everyone knows Vince loves Sports.  This includes not only participating but keeping detailed stats also.    His favorite baseball teams are the San Diego Padres followed by the Mets and Red Sox. His favorite players are Adrian Gonzalez, David Wright and Jon Lester (a cancer survivor himself).   V’s favorite sport is baseball but he loves all sports.   He plays not only baseball but excels in basketball and football.

Vince plays travel baseball for the North county Longhorns and has been with the Horns since he was 7.  V has played almost every position.  He is the consummate team player and can be counted on at any position.  He plays pitcher and catcher (not at the same time), 1st base, 3rd base, right and left field for the Horns and in little league you can add shortstop.   Vince has made All-Stars in all of his eligible years and is a clear leader on the field.

In addition, V recently started playing the bass after a fun week at DayJams music camp this past summer.  He now plays the bass for his middle school youth group in the “yet to be named” middle school praise band at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church (RBCPC).

Vince’s journey has been a steady battle to beat this disease. Shortly after his diagnosis in September, 2008, V began receiving chemotherapy. In November, Vince had what is referred to as limb-sparing surgery to remove the tumor in his left femur. Since the tumor is in the bone this meant removing about 8 inches of the femur bone along with the knee joint and replacing them with a metal prosthetic. Vince recovered well from this surgery and in a few weeks was back up and walking. He continues PT to strengthen his leg and allow more and more activity. His goal is getting back to some sports in time. Vince continues to receive chemotherapy and his hoping to complete those cycles by early summer. This spring Vince had a small setback when a routine scan found a nodule in his left lung. In March, he had surgery to remove the nodule. The good news was only the one was found and the chemo had killed ~80% of the cells. Now Vince continues receiving chemo and is hoping to stay NED (no evidence of disease) as he completes his treatments.
