Jazz at Winona State University

WSU seeks to provide an outlet for jazz musicians of all levels to experience the art of improvisation. Jazz is an inclusive art form that opens doors for creativity in a variety of disciplines. As one of the few truly American artistic traditions, jazz transcends boundaries of culture, race and economics to form a bond of commonality with participants as well as enthusiasts. This arts process expands students’ ability to adapt to circumstances in all walks of life.

Gordon Goodwin and the Big Phat Band will join WSU

7th Annual High School Honor Jazz Festival

November 12-13, 2010

Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, an 18-piece jazz ensemble, celebrates and personifies the best of the big band tradition with a very contemporary and original sound. Through the writing genius of Gordon Goodwin, SRO audiences have enjoyed one of the most craftsman-like hard swinging large jazz ensembles comprised of L.A.’s finest musicians. Gordon’s witty and insightful arrangements propel the listener on a journey through a myriad of styles: latin, blues, swing, classical, hard-hitting jazz, and even an homage to Looney Tunes!
