Observations on Iowa

On Thursday, January 3rd, 2008, I attended the Iowa Caucuses. Thanks to my gracious hosts, Caroline Tolbert and Pev Squire at the University of Iowa, I was able to attend Iowa’s 23rd Precinct Democratic Caucus.

The Caucus was held at City High School in Iowa City. There were 541 people there. It was record turnout. Obama won the precinct handily. Edwards finished a strong second, and Clinton a distant third, barely making the 15% cut.

I arrive at KCID, Cedar Rapids, Iowa at noon on Thursday after a 6AM departure.

Record High Turnout

We can’t even get close to the high school because there are so many cars trying to park. If you are not in the doors of the Caucus Meeting by 7PM, they don’t let you in.

People are getting out and walking.

Gridlock

We get out of the car and walk (hopefully) toward the school. Caroline volunteers to stay with the car and find a parking space, risking being shut out of the Caucus.

It seems like next year Al Gore could suggest a “Carpool to the Caucus” program ...

Just Inside

We’re in! We made it before 7PM and take in the scene. There are 4 Caucuses happening at City High tonight, two precincts holding a Caucus for each party. These people are gathering, enjoying snacks and beverages, figuring out where their Caucus is meeting tonight.
