History tells us that in the 1800’s, men of the sea traveled the four corners of the world on whaling ships and traders. They would leave their loved ones on voyages that often lasted for years. Loneliness and homesickness were a natural part of a seaman’s life and it was common for him to bring home a gift for his wife or sweetheart.

Barbados was often a port of call for returning ships and it was there that they would buy special tokens of remembrance known as sailor’s valentines from the natives.

These valentines were octagonal boxes made of spanish cedar and contained mosaic designs created from a wide variety of exotic seashells often including a message of sentiment. A glass was placed over the design to protect the delicate shells.

This album has been made with the same spirit and philosophy. I’ve been writing for a long time and I wanted to record a collection of my songs, each with its own message. They exemplify many of the styles I’ve played over the years and, though different, are brought together in a single work aptly called, “A Sailor’s Valentine.”

These songs were performed as if in concert and do not meet conventional length standards. I encourage the listener to sit back, turn up the volume and share my music.

I really do hope you enjoy it...

My Very Best Regards,

Vaughan
