Wilson Signs to Play D-II Ball at Ashland
Eagles Tight End and Linebacker Christian Wilson has signed a Letter of Intent to attend Ashland University and play football for the NCAA Division II Eagles located in Ashland, Ohio.
Wilson, 18, a senior at New Life Christian School, was a 2 year All Mid Atlantic Christian Conference (MACC) selection and Eagles co-Captain.
“I am confident Christian will be an asset for this program on and off the athletic arena for years to come,” says Ashland University Head Football Coach Lee Owens. “Christian has consistently demonstrated his ability to excel in his area, and I look forward to seeing that same commitment to excellence at Ashland University. I am eagerly looking forward to working with him this coming fall and having him represent Ashland University.”
Wilson, 6-4, 245, was a four year starter who played tight end and outside linebacker for the Frederick Eagles. His path to a football scholarship began in 2006 when he became a founding member of the Eagles team because he wanted to play football in a Christian environment and help pioneer the varsity home school/private school-without-a-program movement. At the time, there were two similar teams in Maryland and two in Virginia that formed the MACC a year later.
“I am really blessed to have this opportunity to play at Ashland on scholarship,” Wilson says. “Unlike other teams, the Frederick Eagles do not have top of the line equipment or a field house or a weight room.” Wilson and his teammates made up for the lack of facilities by training in the off season with former NFL stars, linebacker Eddie Mason and all-pro cornerback Troy Vincent. “Eddie and Troy worked me harder than I knew I could work, and their encouragement to excel in school, on the field and off helped me reach my goals as a football player and to become a better person.”
Wilson, who was given little or no chance to play at the next level because of the type of team for which he played, has some sage advice for others, “Stay positive, work harder than the next guy, come early to practice and stay late, keep your grades up, and stay out of trouble.”
Wilson, also an honor student and a four year letterman in basketball at New Life, is the son of Christina and Bill Wilson, who is head coach and a co-founder of the Eagles.
