Gays and Lesbians at Grace Cathedral (GALING) is no longer holding monthly meetings. It was decided to suspend the meetings primarily because of poor attendance, but also because so many other Cathedral events of interest to our members regularly occur at the same time as our monthly meetings.

A significant reason for poor attendance at our meetings appears to be that many GLBT persons who attend the Cathedral do not see a need for a GLBT support group, because Grace Cathedral is so welcoming of GLBT persons. Indeed, the Cathedral's motto, "A House of Prayer for All Peoples," says it all. Diversity at the Cathedral is not just a promise, it's a fact.

If the Cathedral is so welcoming, do we really need a GLBT support group? Well, as the organizer of GALING for the past several years, I strongly believe that, despite the low interest in attending meetings, we still need an organization of some sort that makes people -- especially newcomers -- aware that the Cathedral is a place where GLBT persons can feel at home. After all, didn't Our Lord tell the Apostles to go out and spread the good news of the Gospel? We GLBT members of the Cathedral have a similar obligation to spread the good news of our warm welcome to the countless number of GLBT persons who feel marginalized elsewhere. So, rest assured that the suspension of our monthly meetings does not mean the end of GALING. We will continue in our mission of welcoming and affirming the presence of GLBT persons at the Cathedral.

While monthly meetings were a part of GALING's mission, an important other component of GALING is our online Internet discussion and information list, which has not been discontinued. To subscribe, click here and fill out the form. If monthly meetings are resumed, or if any other events are planned, you will be the first to hear about them if you subscribe to this list. And PLEASE NOTE -- this list is not exclusively for local members of the Cathedral! No matter where you are located, you can join in our discussion of GLBT issues. So, please subscribe. We need more participants.

Now, I would like to address the question of who is currently the Ministry Leader of GALING, because some people have asked, "has Tyler Kelly resigned?" Well, the answer to this is both yes -- and no. I have resigned in the sense that I no longer wish to be responsible for chairing monthly GALING meetings. I invite anyone who feels that the meetings should be resumed to step up and re-organize the group in this area. I will continue to manage the GALING online discussion list, and the GALING web site, and coordinate other matters.
