The Cost of following Jesus - Jim Stallard

The cost of following Jesus is expensive – love. But this reading is about staying the distance as well. It’s about staying in love with Jesus and not falling out. Jesus says if you can’t finish – if you fall out – you’re not even good enough for the dung heap.

In this reading, when Jesus left the Pharisee’s house, great crowds followed Him, but He was not impressed by their enthusiasm. Great crowds still proclaim to follow Jesus, and He is still unimpressed. He knew that most of those in the crowd were not the least bit interested in spiritual things. Some wanted only to see miracles, others heard that He fed the hungry, and a few hoped He would overthrow Rome and establish David’s promised kingdom. They were expecting the wrong things.

I wonder if today, we still expect the wrong things. I wonder if our motives are right, if our reasons for coming to church are right, and if our reasons for not of coming to church are right.

The cost to follow can be crushing. If we just follow the crowd, we can lose sight of who we are following, not hear things clearly, find it difficult to know what to do. Sometimes it’s good not to follow the crowd, to withdraw crush – even going on sabbatical is ok. Jesus himself withdrew from the crowds several times.

In the first century, following meant fellowship and community. It literally meant having all things in common, and in Acts, members of the early church held even their material possessions in common (Erickson, 1983: 1064).

This was a result of them genuinely sharing the blessings of the Messianic Age. They were willing to commit themselves to each other fully regardless of gender, race, or social status. Widows and people who were poor and without family or other support were welcomed as equals into the community of believers in both a spiritual and physical sense.

This heightened sense of community lived out in the shadows of Christ’s death and resurrection was never meant to be fixed in time and place. It was meant to be lived out through history up until the present day and into the future (Ladd, 1993: 387-388). The example was meant for us to follow.

The cost of following is not cheap. It means lifelong commitment. It may cost time, money, energy, status, comfort. The most difficult cost though is authenticity. Following Jesus means thinking about what you believe, believing what you think and acting on what you believe. Follow is a verb. It is a doing word. It means giving help, and giving hope. It means staying on track for the long haul.

We have a leading Pharisee inviting Jesus to a meal on the Sabbath. Once again the occasion is set for conflict, instructions in the context of hospitality. Luke notes in the 1st verse that Jesus is watched carefully. In what appears to be an electric atmosphere Jesus tells 3 little stories:

1. Choosing the best seat
2. Choosing guests
3. Inviting guests who make excuses

Jesus challengers the social order of the day, how do we apply the values of these life lessons to our day?

Richard’s sermon is taken from Luke 12. Jesus’ parable of the rich fool reminds us that while we think we’re in control of our own destiny, we’re not. No matter how hard we work, or how much good fortune we may have, we cannot guarantee our future. Our life is in in God’s hands. Jesus urges his followers, both then and now, to lift their sights, seek God’s kingdom and take the long view.
