Leaving the staging yard of Kaiserslautern, we emerge from the Heiligenberg-Tunnel (1347 meters), pass the switchtower (stellwerk) and then enter the junction town of Hochspeyer (Km 43.7). It's in Hochspeyer that we find KBS 650 branching off toward Enkenbach.

Hochspeyer is a small town of less than 5,000 people. The station has two platforms serving 4 tracks, a freight house (Güterbahnhof) and a loading dock (laderampe). There are also three tracks for exchanging freight between the two routes.

We could change trains here and head up the Alsenztal toward Enkenbach, but for now lets stay onboard. Leaving Hochspeyer we plunge into the heart of the Pfalzerwald and enter Schlossberg Tunnel in Frankenstein.
