Today’s lesson was a continuation of last week’s lesson about the story of Ruth. We divided the class into three groups who each wrote a basic screenplay for a movie about Ruth. Each group wrote the basic premise for each scene and drew pictures for all of them. The groups presented their ideas to the class and received criticism and praise for their presentations. The movie ideas reflected the concepts on the posters the students signed last week. The concepts were the concept that God has no role in our daily lives, the concept that God controls everything in our lives, and the concept that God punished Elimelech for leaving Israel. After the presentations, we asked the students why it was important to study the deeper meaning of Jewish texts. They said that it is important because God wanted us to “read between the lines” in the Torah, like we did with the story of Ruth. We then asked the students about their role models and whom they would like to follow as Ruth followed Naomi. The answers ranged from parents to television characters to superheroes.
