As an integral part of Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Week (Presidential Proclamation No. 1136, designating the 3rd Week of September of every year), the ADAP held its 2nd National Congress with the theme “Dementia Prevention: The Philippine Adult Cognitive Health Initiative” (Ayaw Namin Makalimot) at the Manila Hotel, September 18 to 20.
Various speakers addressed issues on Cardiovascular Risk Factors; Physical and Social Activities and the Maintenance of Cognitive Function; Stroke, Diabetes and Dementia; and Dissemination of Dementia Prevention strategies.
The Affair was graced by the Assistant Secretary of Health Dr. Elmer Punzalan, who spoke on the ”The Challenge: Designing a Public Road Map to Promote and Protect Cognitive Health and Dr. Peter Rabins who spoke on the effectiveness of current therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, the development of measures of quality of life in persons with AD and the care of patients.
Preceding the congress proper ADAP conducted a Post-Graduate Course (dealing with Treatment and Prevention of AD; Dementia care resources and management of BPSDs) and a Caregivers Training Course (with topics such as Coping and Living with Dementia; Nutrition; Problems in Mobility; Behavior; and Rehabilitation
Joining the rest of the world in celebrating World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, the Alzheimer’s Disease Association of the Philippines held its traditional “Memory Walk” along the Baywalk, Roxas Blvd., culminating at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta for a program and snacks.
Led by officers and members of ADAP, the walk was participated by hundreds from senior citizens groups, nursing and caregiver schools, various hospital groups, members of Pharmaceutical Companies and the general public. The group bearing banners with the battle cry “Ayaw Namin Makalimot”, cheered and danced to the drum beating sounds of the “Ati-atihan” and the musical bands.
The walk was held as a plea for support for dementia patients and to make people aware that dementia is on the rise , no time to lose. That all have to act now!
