Another month, another 1000+ rounds of .45 down range. Lately, I brought in some friends to shoot the HK45. Angela (above) is a novice shooter and she insisted the HK45 was the easiest gun to shoot between it, my G17 and my Colt/Novak. She did say that the 1911 had a lighter trigger (well, it is 3 pounds!) but preferred the HK45’s grip. She did some great shooting! Keeping all her shots but two in the A-Zone at 21 feet (50 rounds).

I also got a lot of drills in. I have been practicing a lot with my timer, etc. Here is a breakdown of my drills as they stand now...

Timed draw at 21 feet. Fire one shot, reholster, two shots, reholster three shots.
Timed draw at 21 feet while moving forward. Fire one shot, reholster, two shots, reholster three shots.
Timed draw at 21 feet while moving backwards. Fire one shot, reholster, two shots, reholster three shots
Timed draw at 21 feet while moving laterally. Fire one shot, reholster, two shots, reholster three shots (left and right).
Repeat the above drills at 30 feet.
Timed draw at 25 yards. Fire one shot, reholster, two shots, reholster three shots.
Repeat drills 1 strong handed and weak handed. I do the weak handed drills with the gun on the ground.
Fall on ass drill. I practice falling and drawing and shooting an ipsc target while laying on my back. This drill is useful for practicing against opponents who are trying to stab or grapple with you.

After this I usually shoot some bullseye with my .22. After that, I break out my Colt and shoot one 30 round mag. My rifle drills usually start with the rifle hanging from the sling with hands at my side. With the timer I lift and fire at 25 yards to 50 yards.

I also shot some Privi “Green tip” trough my Colt without incident. I then switch to my 22 conversion and practice most of the above drills at 25- 50 yards with transitions to my HK .45.

I practice malfunction drills with the little orange bullets I bought from Inappropriate Response.

As some of you know, I bought an M16 (HELL YES) and am currently waiting on the paperwork. I also am getting a 416 upper (10.5) and am looking into getting an AAC can for the whole rig. My plan is to run it with my Aimpoint T-1 (which up until recently was on my beloved FEG Ak (I will miss it! Sniffle, sniffle).

I can’t believe I have sold all my AK-47s (well, I have one but I am trading it). I have been selling most of my gun collection to finance my M16/416. I want to get it now, as I am not confident it will be as easy to get in the future. When I get done, my gun collection will be...

Colt AR
Colt M16/416
P7m8
P7m8
Novak’s custom 1911
HK45
Ruger .22
Marlin Guide gun/Scout

Man, how my collection will have shrunk. But, I had too much crap as it was, and the quality of my overall collection will be pretty high.

By the way, the HK45 is still running 100 percent. It is my EOTW gun and I keep it in my little oh crap bag. Here are some pics...

Went out to my buddy Shane’s in Andersonville, GA. He has a nice little setup with steel plates and pepper poppers. We started off with a little 21 foot accuracy practice. He was testing a very nice custom Kimber with Crimson trace laser grips. After I got a chance to sight in my new Aimpoint on my FEG, we went over and shot some plates. I really need to set up some plates at my normal range.

The HK45 got rained on a bit today, no big deal. I picked up some reloads pretty cheap, and they ran fine. Not much of an update gents. I did let a few other people shoot the HK, and they all enjoyed it. As an aside, this range has quite a bit of very powdery sand. I was dropping my mags in the dirt, as I always do, and my buddy Shane asked me not to do that if I shot his Kimber.

We also shot a Smith Snubbie, a Sig 220 and my Colt with 22 conversion. Everybody seems to agree, the 22 conversion for the AR is a must have.

GHB

Hello gents,

After a brief period of driving the new car to the exclusion of much else, I have gotten out a few times to shoot the HK45. I shot it 200 rounds today, 150 rounds last week and 200 rounds before that. All of it has been Winchester White Box except for a box of 50 Ranger 230 +p. My camera is busted so I pretty much am limited to camera phone pictures. I have been asked to take photos of the wear and tear on the gun. There isn’t much other than a little finish wear on the sharp edges and a natty looking mag well (metal mag vs. plastic)

I basically have been doing the usual drills. I did add some speed drills today, since I have been focusing on shooting on the move these last few months to the exclusion of much else. Basically, I set up two targets today, and did my 1, 2, 3 drills with my AR and constantly downloaded the AR so I could practice transitions.

As you can see from the pics above I keep my HK45 and some spare AR mags in my bag O’doom.

Another reason for the break in my breaking my HK was a brief period where I pretty much shot 1911s in prep for a 1911 operators’ class (which I think I mentioned in an earlier post). I love 1911s, but let me say this, the shootability of the 1911 does not make up for the constant tinkering that the require. Frankly, 95% of the superior shootability of the 1911 comes from familiarity. A lot more folks are used to 1911s. If things were to get serious, there is no way in Hell I would trust a 1911 over an HK45. I don’t care if the gun is tuned by Larry Vickers or Hephaestus or who the Hell ever, the HK45 is a more reliable gun, probably 10X more reliable in my opinion. But since my Hk45 hasn’t even so much as hiccuped, I might as well say 10000000000 times more reliable.

I keep seeing references to the supposed inferiority of the stock HK45 sights. I know I am a broken record on this, but these are excellent stock sights. I had a guy, no lie, with stock Glock sights tell me how much the HK45 sights sucked. WTHE.

I got to go out to the range with my buddy Kirt. He brought his P7 and various ARs. He and I spent about 10 minutes giggling over the awesomeness of P7s. They really are excellent.

We shot a variety of other guns, a nice Cav arms Ar, a really nice Century FAL (no lie, it looked as nice as the DSAs I’ve seen), my 45-70 (Matilda), my Mosin Nagant (Bitchsky), my Colt AR, and other goodies. I shot 60 rounds through bitchsky, but in true Mosin 38 fashion, it felt like 600 rounds.

Does anyone know how to reduce bolt bind in Mosin Nagants? Mine is a real Bitch(sky), hence the name. I love blasting with that thing. A 6 foot plus 350 pound plus tattoed guy came up to me and said, “What a Cannon!” The short barrel really makes that thing noisy.

Anyway guys, I will try to be more regular. Plus, I am looking to do some more creative stuff, like shooting it muddy, sandy, dusty, etc. So make some suggestions.

Over the past two weeks I have put 800 rounds through Erna. Consisting of 100 rounds of Remington JHP, 200 rounds of 230 grain WWB, 300 rounds of Georgia Arms 230 grain ball and 200 rounds of Georgia arms 185 grain ball.

I actually put a few dozen more rounds through the gun than this but can’t account for them exactly, so I won’t count them.

Again, I put them through my 1,2 3 drills at 21, 30 and 25 yards. I always start stationary, then forward, then backward, then laterally in both directions.

Next I do box drills.

Then I do transition drills. By the way. I recently purchased a Ciener conversion for my AR. Oh my God this is a great idea. I have been able to run 500 rounds per weekend through my AR. Doing 25 yard drills and transitions this thing is a Godsend. My shooting on the move has improve 100 percent. Today I had a zen moment where I was wearing out a clump of dirt while walking sideways. It seemed like I couldn’t miss. I would change from 25, 50 to 100 effortlessly. An Aimpoint and a 22 kit plus 500 round packs of 22=bye bye trigger snatch. I clean out the barrel then finish with 3 mags of 223. I am telling you, other than the noise there isn’t enough difference to do without one.

If you have an AR and you don’t get a 22 conversion kit you are a doofus, plain and simple. Get it, get it now. Also, the black dog machine mags are awesome. You can load up 25 rounds per mag (more actually).

I went to Savannah this weekend. I planned on shooting at Patricks Uniform, which has one of the nicest ranges I have ever seen. It looks like the Beverly Hills gun club range from Beverly Hills cop II. In fact, it is nicer. It looks like an Apple Store with a gun range.

One problem: $25 per range session! Holy crap. That is booty rape. An annual membership is $700 and you still have to pay $5 per range session!! No thanks. I have never seen a range this expensive in Georgia. It is pretty, but DAMN!!! Even a Glock 17 was $599. Wowser.

On holsters. I have to say I am very happy with my Blade-Tech inside the waistband holster. It sets the gun very well and it doesn’t mar the finish. It looks like Blade-tech took their time in developing this unit.

The HK45 has not malfunctioned yet. Not one round. Not even a dead primer. It remains as accurate as my Novak’s custom 1911 (which is also a tack-driver) and the trigger has settled in at a hair over 4 pounds.

I really think the military should look into this gun. It is basically all the good things about the MK23 (accurate, bomb-proof, stone-reliable) in a more compact, much more ergonomic package.

The only thing I would change about the HK45 are the forward cocking serrations. I do not use them and think they are ugly. Plus, they probably make the gun more likely to snag and are definitely a little hide-out for dirt. Delete them.

The magazines also seem to be holding up very well. The finish is, of course, worn, but the base plates are sturdier than my P2000 and much more so than my old Glock 17. I have essentially only run two mags for these 10000 rounds (except when I ran a third mag during my classes) and they seem like they will work for the foreseeable future.

This upcoming weekend I am taking a Larry Vickers 1911 class. So, Erna gets a well-deserved rest for the upcoming week.
