11/16/08:  Game Result:  Mariners - 4 vs. Bay Harbor Red Wings - 4

The Mariners faced the Red Wings for the first time this season and with a last minute effort were able to earn a 4-4 tie gaining another point for league standings.  The Red Wings got on the board first with a late first period goal by #7 Trevor Burrola with an assist from #5 Elyssa Levarto.  The Mariners had some good chances as they outshot the Red Wings 6 to 4, but the Red Wings’ goal tender, Cory Hutchinson made some big saves to hold the Mariners scoreless after one period.  Trever Burrola struck again early in the second period receiving a pass from #8 Roger Zhang and beating Mariners goalie Nathan Anderson on a breakaway.  The Mariners continued to work hard and had many good quality chances outshooting the Red Wings 10-5 in the second.  But the Red Wings’ goalie Hutchinson did a great job of getting in the Mariners way while receiving some help from the goal posts.  The Mariners finally got on the board at the 4:09 mark with a hard wrist shot from James Keenan as he beat Hutcinson over his left shoulder hitting the upper right corner of the net.  Defensemen Sean Laveau and Evan Marnell each received an assist on the goal.  At the end of two periods, the Red Wings were holding on to a 2-1 lead.  The third period continued to be a battle between the two teams as the Mariners outshot the Wings 11 to 7 but had a hard time beating the Wings goalie.  The Wings, however, got on the board again stretching their lead by two when #72 Jacob Nordorf recevied a pass from #25 Kanta Kondo and scored on the powerplay.  Clawing their way back into the game, the Mariners’ Luke Flay scored a goal at the 4:22 mark of the period with James Keenan and Sean Laveau receiving assists.  The Mariners caught a break soon after when the Wings’ #19 Aidan Willams was called for tripping putting the Mariners on the powerplay.  However, the Mariners had a tough time controlling the play and the Wings Trever Burrola scored his third goal of the game with a shorthander 18 seconds into the powerplay.  The Mariners then responded by capitalizing on the powerplay when James Keenan scored his second goal of the game with assists from Sean Laveau and Jack Austin bringing the Mariners within one with just 1:51 remaining in the period.  Off of the immediate face off, the Mariners were able to force the play to the Wings net getting the Wings’ goal tender to cover the puck with 1:34 remaining the game with the next face off in the Wing’s zone.  After using their time out, the Mariners pulled their goalie putting out the extra attacker for the face off.  The Mariners’ Rhys Julian-Jones was able to control the face off getting the puck to Keenan then getting the puck to the net.  With just 46 seconds left on the clock, Alexander Krause was able to pick up the rebound and force it passed the Wings goalie earning the Mariners second tie of the season and received the game puck and #1 Star of the Game.  The Mariners finished the game outshooting the Wings 27 to 16.  Picking up the #2 Star of the Game was Alexander Haddad who contributed to the team effort with a strong game on the blueline.  The #3 Star of the Game went to Matthew Fairweather for his hard work and aggressive play in the game giving him a couple of scoring chances.  For the second time this season, the Mariners showed what they’re made of coming back from behind as they put in a great effort and never gave up.  With each game the Mariners continue to improve and will prove to be a force to reckon with come the second round of league play.

11/8/08:  Game Result:  Mariners - 2 vs. Inland Valley Wild - 3

Continuing their improvement and playing their best team effort so far, the Mariners fought a hard battle against the Inland Valley Wild out shooting the Wild 15 to 11, but came up short in the end.  Both teams fought hard in the first period but were unable to get on the scoreboard.  The Wild’s #28 Mark Baker opened the scoring in the first period sliding the puck past Mariners’ goal tender, Nathan Anderson at the 9:40 mark.  The Mariners quickly responded when Alexander Krause drove to the net and drove home a rebound past the Wilds goal tender, Jack Wolfe at the 7:07 mark of the period.  The 2nd period ended tied 1-1 with the Mariners leading in shots at 9 to 8 through 2 periods.  The Wild came out strong in the third period scoring two goals before the Mariners could answer back.  The first came at the 8:35 mark when the Wild’s #27 Ryan Richardson picked up a loose puck and slid it between the pipes.  The Mariners fought hard, getting good quality chances, but were held at bay by Jack Wolfe who made some outstanding saves keeping his team ahead in the game.  The Wild’s #6 Matthew Lampianen gave his team a two goal cushion when he broke behind the Mariners defense and beat Anderson on a breakaway at the 2:58 mark.  The cushion proved to be needed as the Mariners were able to strike one last time when James Keenan received a break out pass from Sean Laveau and then streaked behind the Wild’s defense and beat Wolfe on a breakaway just 24 seconds later.  But Wolfe proved to be the difference in the game as he held the Mariners to only one goal in the third period as his team was out shot 6 to 3 in the third.  Thanks in part to his improved passing and hard work in the game, Dylan Freed earned the #3 Star of the Game, while John Drury earned the #2 Star with his improved play on the blueline.  Another blueliner, Sean Laveau picked up the game puck and #1 star of the game with his strong play on defense and his improved passsing picking up an assist on the Mariners second goal.
