Clipper fleet warmly welcomed in Qingdao

Friday, 15 February 2008

New York, the winner of the race from Singapore to Qingdao was welcomed in the Olympic port of Qingdao at 2pm on Friday, 15th Feb. The reception was amazing and Duggie Gillespie, the skipper of New York, said that the warm welcome has made up for the cold temperatures and the crew were all looking forward to visiting Qingdao. This is the second consecutive win for New York, placing them 4th in the overall results. The crew were met with Qingdao beer on board and escorted to the stage on a red carpet by the mayor Xia Geng, Madam Zang, Executive Chairwoman of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Committee and Clipper Chairman Sir Robin. Fireworks, hundreds of drummers and taiqi performers made the welcome unique and unforgettable.

Few hours later Durban and Glasgow were given the same warm welcome with more fireworks, champagne, beer, excited media and spectators. Glasgow, with their quilts and only female skipper received extra media attention.

Six of the remaining boats are arriving on Saturday, 16th Feb. Qingdao is expected early on Sunday morning ad we can only imagine the welcome lady Qing will receive in her home port.
