2009 was a banner year for me. Surprised me. The economy was not helpful for anything to do with the arts so it
put a little hitch in the git-along. In spite of that, I have been blessed. I opened a retail gallery for a 10 month trial period. During that time I featured 6 shows, I might add ‘with all the trimmings’. However, I found true what everyone told me. It‘s difficult to wear both retail and producing artist hats. I enjoyed the experience, learned a lot, might do it again in the future, but in the meantime, the gallery is online under my website. I produced a book, Mears 2009, which can be viewed by clicking on the link in this photo or going to my website and clicking on the book icon. The book is specific to my work produced this past year. I’d love for you to have a look. All comments regarding the book would be appreciated. Hopefully, comments will be favorable but if not, send it along!

Time just flies. The last Blog I posted was prior to my knowing that I was about to open my own gallery here in Oklahoma City. The gallery (Suzanne Wallace Mears Gallery) opened it’s doors the beginning of April. The photo features one of my glass masks from the current show,
“Masks and Totems: an Exploration of the Primitive” This body of work can be seen on my website. However, the gallery also shows the work of other artists. We’ve had 5 shows so far with 3 major openings. Photo’s of all shows can be seen on my website under Events. And, on Facebook at Suzanne Mears Art. I think one of the cutest shows was the “Dog Days of Summer” in the absolute heat of an Oklahoma August. A 4 piece live group played, a striped tent decorated the outside, drinks were created by the infamous Caribbean Connection (Limonda Margarita’s) and barkingly snappy hors d’ oeurves were served by 2 waiters in dog costumes. We had a huge turnout and were able to give a nice donation to Free to Live (animal sanctuary). Please tune in again soon. I won’t stay away so long!

It’s also an excellent day for some camera activity. The squirrel, actually I have 7 of them, and they’re relentlessly eating all the bird food I put out. Never enough. My show the middle of February was
a high five successful event. At present, I’m creating some large glass sculptural pieces which are mounted on stone artifacts or an organic piece of wood. See my website for examples. I have recently sold a number of sculptures. A news update is a large sculptural piece will be included in an exhibition entitled “UK/OK: Traditions in Contemporary Design” at the Price Tower Art Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is outstanding. The exhibition opens July and runs until Jan, 2010.
It’s been a month since I’ve posted. My solo show at Joseph Gierek Fine Art in Tulsa, Dec. 4, 2008, was very well received. A wonderful
turn-out. Simply a stunning gallery. I’m very proud to be I’m represented by his gallery. Then, Christmas, New Years, tumultuous times with the economy, Obama’s time to take the stage on Tuesday. Next, the 25th annual Omelette Party for the Oklahoma City Museum of Art on Feb. 7 and my own show on Thursday, Feb. 12, at my studio. I have a piece in the Oklahoma City Museum of Art’s event. Please see their website www.okcmoa.com and look under calendar. I will be posting my studio show later on my BLOG. My glass continues to be shown at Pickard
Galleries, OKC, Joseph Gierek Fine Art in Tulsa, Ok., Basalt Gallery, Basalt, Colorado ,and Janne Fine Art in Carefree, Arizona.

I don’t know about you but this was one very intense, emotional, presidential campaign, Now, it’s decided - it’s Obama, and we get on with life. Challenging times. As an artist I’m concerned about the next season and what it will mean to sales and gallery successes. Rough waters. I’m involved with a benefit for the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition this Sunday and a show at Joseph Gierek Fine Art
(Gallery) in Tulsa which opens on Dec. 4 and will remain until the first week in January (Glass and Ceramics). In there somewhere is a quick trip to the Basalt Gallery (Colorado) and I think Thanksgiving is around the corner.
I love the color flip from summer to fall and find the thoughtfulness of this gorgeous change relevant to our lives in every way, especially this year, at this time.
