Now we all have to log on to the district network with usernames and passwords and “authenticate” to reach the internet, our email and the printer / anything on our network.

It works differently on “wired” (yellow cord attached) and “wireless” (COW laptops) computers:

on wired computers, you can access anything on the 4J network, and don’t have to “authenticate”
until you travel outside of the 4J network

on the “wireless” network, you will have to “authenticate” immediately on Aruba to go anywhere on
the network; you may have to click the “refresh” button / go to another website to “clear the cache”
and reach the Aruba login page

Teachers > you will have to make some changes in your internet browser settings on your teacher computers for the web filter to operate correctly:

Safari > click on “Safari” and uncheck “Block Pop-Up Windows”
Firefox > click on “Firefox” and select “Preferences”, then “Content”, keep the box checked for “Block
Pop-Up Windows”, click on “Exceptions” and enter lane.edu

Student Info > Student usernames and password lists can be accessed through ESIS.

Teachers > login to this CIS site - http://www.4j.lane.edu/cis/ - to learn how to generate
“Class Labels of Student Usernames” (Gilham)

Unfortunately, the student usernames and passwords are not the same as the FS3 server
(Spencer Butte)

More updated information about the new 4J web filter can be accessed here:
http://ns.lane.edu/webfilter/updates

1. Continue to be aware that tests expire 45 calendar days from the start date. If the test expires, the test closes from where the student ended and that test opportunity is over. Students answering more than 5 items will count towards participation. The number of items that constitute a valid score will be determined by ODE at the end of the testing window, so it is possible that an expired test will be given a valid score later on (highest score will be used). ODE has become slower getting these upcoming expiration dates to me and/or producing incomplete lists. They are working on changing the expiration period to 90 days which will help with this issue, but there have not been any timeframes given. I've attached a calendar that shows expiration dates 45 days out from when you begin a test.

2. If a student has completed a test that shows on the proctor's screen as something like "56 out of 50 items completed," this is the result of field testing items for next year. These items are in addition to test items for this year and not figured into student scores.

3. Please continue to report any test improprieties to me. We've been doing a great job with this, its just a reminder.

4. If you are experiencing slowness or blank screens on Macs in OAKS, try emptying the Cache in Safari. Go to Safari in the Menu bar, Empty Cache, and restart the computer.

Thanks,
Jim Conaghan

If a student LOSES THE CONNECTION while testing:

first just respond “OK” to the pop-up window, and it May let you right back into the test, acting as a “refresh”,
if it doesn’t, go to next step >

try force-quitting the OAKS browser by holding down the contol, option, shift & F10 keys

if the browser FAILS TO QUIT, re-start the computer / move the student to another computer to login again

once the student has logged in again, the teacher/test administrator needs to re-approve them to start the
        test again

believe it or not, the test will remember where the student left on the test...
