Assistant Director of Communications/Web Content

Manage workflow for marketing/communications efforts.

  1. Supervise six employees, including writers/project managers and a photographer.

  2. Staff projects include web content related to Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, their clinics and other patient care-related areas; two weekly hospital e-newsletters; a bi-monthly e-newsletter for the dean of the UW School of Medicine; 10 clinic and hospital brochures a year; all photography for web and publications; two annual reports; fact sheets for all UW Medicine entities; and a quarterly newsletter to referring physicians.

  3. Encourage staff to tell stories through audio slide shows and video on the web.

  4. Oversaw publications manager in successfully taking the 2008-09 annual report to the web, saving $58,000 in printing, mailing and design fees.

  5. Managing the editing and migration of 2,000 pages of content to the new UW Medicine web site on schedule for a late summer 2009 launch.

  6. Strategize regularly with UW Medical Center’s executive director on messaging and internal communications and ghostwrite his weekly column for the hospital newsletter.

  7. Produce communications pieces ranging from web content to magazine articles and marketing brochures, including:

  8. A major marketing piece promoting UW Medicine’s neurological surgery services to referring physicians in Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

  9. Cover story in Columns, the UW alumni magazine, on Dr. Christopher Murray, director of the UW Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

  10. Coordinated the move/merging of four communications and marketing offices to one at

   UW Medicine at South Lake Union in 2008.

  1. Successfully pitched UW as the site and sponsor for the Association of Health Care Journalists conference in April 2009.

Media Relations Manager

  1. Pitched stories about UW Medical Center and its physicians, patients and medical care to local  and specialty media. Successful pitches resulted in:

  2. A Seattle Times feature on Dr. Brian Krabak, who specializes in treating extreme athletes.

  3. An  article in Masters Athlete by a Chicago Tribune reporter about ream-and-run, a shoulder surgery technique pioneered by a UW Medicine surgeon. 

  4. Organized press conferences, including:

  5. Press conference in 2007 announcing Seattle’s first heart-lung transplant.

  6. Press conference following President Bush’s 2006 veto of legislation that would have provided federal funding for expanded stem cell research, in coordination with U.S. Sen. Patty Murray’s office.

  7. Handled media inquiries and crisis communications for UW Medical Center, including:

  8. Announcement and coverage of quintuplets born at UW Medical Center in 2006.

  9. Settlement of a lawsuit involving charges for outpatient procedures at UW Medical Center clinics in 2006.

  10. Produced a thrice-yearly magazine promoting UWMC’s specialty services (circulation 160,000).

  11. Refined approval processes and reduced design fees from $5,800 to $4,000 per issue.

  12. Pooled money spent on contract photography for UW Medicine publications and hired a full-time photographer, which saved money and assured full rights to images.

Supervised a media relations specialist and a staff photographer.

Publications Manager, Harborview Medical Center.

  1. Produced a yearly 56-page Report to the Community (circulation 25,000), a thrice-yearly community newsletter (circulation 100,000), clinic brochures, patient guides and campus maps.

  2. Reduced annual report costs from $120,000 per year to $80,000 by changing paper, reducing the print run, refining approval processes and reducing change orders, and re-negotiating design and photography contracts.

Strategized regularly with executive director and COO on messaging for all publications.

  1. Collaborated on marketing efforts, including strategy, messaging and writing ad copy for specialty magazines and articles and produced major communications pieces for key services.

  2. Oversaw work of a staff writer for all publications, which included 12 clinic brochures per year, a weekly staff newsletter and twice-yearly newsletter for the medical director.


May 2001-October 2004.

Corporate Communications Specialist, INTEGRIS Health, Oklahoma City.

  1. Directed marketing and media efforts for internal clients including oncology services, women’s and children’s services, Bennett Fertility Institute and Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation.

  2. Pitched stories and fielded inquiries from local media. organized press conferences and served as one of two spokespersons on-air during tornado season and other breaking news events.

  3. Produced catalog for the yearly Women’s Health Forum featuring speakers such as actress Rue McClanahan and singer-actor Harry Belafonte. Promoted the event through advertising in the Daily Oklahoman and media coverage in newspapers, television and radio.

  4. Developed and produced major publications including a system-wide image piece.


November 1999-May 2001. Marketing Consultant, Oklahoma City.

  1. Managed and marketed a 20,000-square foot art gallery and studio, booking on average three major events a month, including a strategic planning retreat for Sonic Industries’ marketing division.

  2. Conducted and implemented market research findings for the Oklahoma Historical Society to determine membership demographics and how to attract younger members.

Promoted and organized the society’s first fundraising event, which raised $30,000.

  1. Wrote and obtained a $10,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant for a society folk life program.
