Smith Mountain Lake is over 20,000 acres and it has 500 miles of coastline.  It is known as the jewel of Virginia for its pristine beauty.  It was created in 1966 when engineers dammed the Backwater and Roanoke rivers and flooded Smith Mountain Gap which now provides electricity for the surrounding communities.
