This new social identity has been introduced to RUYC and “Scuttlebutt” will provide a calendar of events for the Under 35’s.
It is hoped that the establishment of “Scuttlebutt” will encourage our younger members to enjoy enhanced usage of the club.
“Scuttlebutt” is a work in progress. It is envisaged that a range of small regular events will create a good foundation for larger and inter club events, ensuring it becomes a recognised part of the RUYC social scene.
To ensure Scuttlebutt becomes a successful identity for us and those who follow us, the ideas and feedback of its members are crucial.
Please contact Lucy Kerr by email: scuttlebutt.ruyc@gmail.com.
Please ensure the club office holds your correct contact information.

Cruising Awards

On 24th February some 85 members and their guests gathered in the Dining Room for the Annual Cruising Dinner and Adjudication of the Cruising Logs covering the 2011 season. Eight logs had been submitted covering a wide rang of cruising exploits.
We were very fortunate to have Frank Smyth as our adjudicator this year and we were delighted that he was accompanied to the Cruising Dinner by his wife Muriel who generously agreed to present the Trophies.
Following a most enjoyable Dinner (our thanks to Brian McMillan, our Head Chef, and all the kitchen and front of house teams) and the various Toasts, the time had arrived when we would find out what Frank had thought of our submissions and who he felt most worthy to receive the trophies.
Frank had spent many hours reading through each log in detail and gave an excellent account of each. He had obviously enjoyed the task and his enthusiasm was infectious as he withdrew many details from each log in a humorous and good natured fashion. Each log was very different and Frank expressed how difficult it had been to make his choice of winners for the various trophies.
His final choices were:
The ‘Longship Trophy’ – Gregg Taylor for his cruise to Brittany on board Blue Squirrel.
The ‘Viscount Bangor Trophy’ – Rosemary Stevenson for her cruise, also to Brittany, on board El Torro.
The ‘Arthur H Crawford Globe’ – Greg Matthews cruising the West Coast of Scotland on board Älgen.
Pat Adair, wife of our Vice Commodore presented Frank with a piece of cut-glass and Muriel with a bouquet of flowers. The formal part of the evening ended with a toast by the Vice Commodore to “Good Cruising in 2012”.

How come?
Well the two protagonists were Murray and Mr Michael McKee. As Desmond is aged eighty two and Michael aged eighty one, their combined ages amount to one hundred and sixty three years!
It seems unlikely that this record will be challenged any time soon, except of course by themselves. One can only admire their competitive spirit and willingness to continue to support the Club’s snooker activities, also that they left behind a trail of beaten and much younger opponents on their way to the final which was eventually won by Desmond.
As a matter of record, it should be noted that Desmond has won the Singles title six times – 1978, 1982, 1983, 1986, 2002 and 2011. From information available, he shares this distinction with Mr Ian Blair who has also won the title on six occasions.
Desmond has also won the Doubles Tournament seven times – in 1975 and 1982 with Mr Geoffrey Henderson, in 2002 with the late Mr Desmond Irwin and in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 with his current partner Mr Gordon A Finlay.
All the players now look forward with trepidation to finding out if they will be drawn against Desmond in 2012/13.
Colonel Garth Corbett, our Honorary Secretary, presented the refurbished ‘Roger Neill Trophy’ to Desmond on Wednesday 22nd February. Garth was recently instrumental in re-designing a new base which was machined and polished from a block of walnut and for updating the engraving on the trophy. He also cleaned and refurbished the model of HMS Beagle that for the decoration on the trophy.

We were delighted that our Commodore, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, found time in his very busy diary to visit the Club last November. Although in the planning stages for many months, only a very few people were aware of the event right up to the last minute.
It was decided that, unlike the Patron’s visit in 2009, the Club should maximise the attendance by members. Criteria were drawn up to include not only the ‘old and bold’ but also a wide range of members including those that had joined within the past twelve months and our young competitive sailing members.
The great day arrived and the Clubhouse was full to capacity. The Vice Commodore gave a briefing to those present and at 12.00 noon the Commodore arrived.
Upon arrival His Royal Highness was greeted by Mr David Lindsay, Lord Lieutenant for County Down, who introduced him to the Mayor of North Down, the Chief Executive of North Down Borough Council and our Member of Parliament, Lady Sylvia Hermon.
He was then re-introduced to Dr Stanton Adair who acted as his guide throughout the engagement. On the upstairs landing the Commodore met the Club officers and their spouses. His Royal Highness then visited the recently re- furbished Lipton Room where he heard a brief presentation on Sir Thomas Lipton by Michael McKee, Club Historian and Gordon Finlay, Club Archivist, and viewed some of the Club’s Silverware and Trophies.
In the Gloucester Room His Royal Highness met members of the General Committee and their partners, before proceeding to the Strangers’ Room where he went on to meet Past Flag Officers and their partners.
Later in the Front Bar and Dining Room, His Royal Highness met more than one hundred and fifty current Club members. He graciously spent time speaking to everyone and showed
much interest in the life of the Club. There followed an excellent buffet lunch with serving points in the Dining Room and Strangers Room. The lengthy visit (two and a half hours) was enjoyed by all and the time seemed to fly.
At the end of the visit the Vice Commodore said a few words before inviting His Royal Highness to present a gift of an engraved crystal vase to long serving member of staff Mrs Heather Hamilton. Dr Adair then invited the Commodore to say a few words and to sign the Visitors’ Book.
Before departing the Club, His Royal Highness met a number of key RUYC staff and expressed his gratitude for all their hard work not only on the day of his visit, but throughout the year.
It was a most enjoyable occasion and we hope that it will not be too long before we have the pleasure of welcoming our Commodore back to his Club.
