Helen R. Whitby Memorial Scholarship

 

Helen R. Whitby (1929-2008) was a christian woman who had a special way of working with young people. She counseled and was a second mother to numerous young people in and around the Macon ares. She was a member of Me. Moriah Baptist Church where she served faithfully all of her life. She was also the advisor for the “Gospel Movement” Who she affectionately called “he babies”. She was an educator with the Bibb. County School System for approximately 25 years. This memorial Scholarship will help keep her memory alive and will provide an avenue for students to attend a postsecondary school.

Scholarship Award:


This scholarship will provide a one time award(minimum of $250.00) to a high school student(s) who plan(s) to attend:

  1. •An accredited four year university or college

  2. • Two year accredited college

  3. •Vocational/technical school



The Applicant Must:

  1. • Have been accepted for admission and plan to attend one of the above

  2. •Have an overall average of 80% or higher (provide copy of high school transcript)

  3. •Be an active member f a church or gospel choir/group

  4. •Participate in at least one extracurricular school activity, club, or community service

  5. •Exhibit outstanding character

  6. •Receive a signed recommendation with contact information from a teacher or counselor and a Sr. Pastor of the church where you attend (should address integrity, written/oral skills, extracurricular activities, personality, motivation, leadership, community involvement, and financial need.)

  7. •Provide an essay (200 words or less) addressing the following topics: background, interest, career goals, activities, home life, plans for scholarship money, how it will help you in the future, and anything else you would like the committee to know about you

  8. •Submit a completed application with required documentation

  9. •Must have been a resident of Bibb County for at least 3 years.


Selection Process:

All applications will be reviewed and scored by a panel of 3-5 people. The scholarship award will be announced at an annual concert given by the Gospel Movement.
