RI FREE CLINIC FEATURING JULIE MILLER-HENDRY (VISTA)
A VISTA Shares Her Experience
AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer, Julie Miller-Hendry discusses her work at the Rhode Island Free Clinic on Thursday, February 4, 2010. Dozens of uninsured adults wait for the chance to see a doctor. The Clinic aspires to expand their services for those in need. On Thursday, the Clinic could only take 15 new patients. They pulled names from a bucket and the many who couldn't be seen were put on the waiting list. The first Thursday of every month is "lottery night" giving the lucky ones a chance at comprehensive health care. See also Sept. 9 YouTube on the RI Free Clinic lottery line. Governor's Office and collected thousands of donations, including from many RI businesses, and put together 500 boxes of "holiday cheer" -- snacks, books, socks, knit hats, candy, magazines, toiletries, and messages of care and love from children in schools throughout the state -- for RI's 500 National Guard deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and other stations overseas. The spirit of generosity and mindfulness is alive and well. We miss our women and men in active service.
