Heather Kempskie, an expert in sibling relationships, talks about boy-boy, boy-girl and girl-girl dynamics and how birth order plays a part in how kids interact, argue, compete and get along with each other in the same family.

Tune in to get simple tips on quelling squabbles and bringing out the best in your children. Heather also talks about the sibling workshops that she and her identical twin sister, Lisa Hanson, (both pictured above with their children) lead for parents and the great activities in their paperback book, “The Siblings’ Busy Book,” which is available nationwide and on Amazon for $9.95.

“The Siblings’ Busy Book” features lots of activity ideas that kids of all ages can do. The chapters range from Rainy Day fun to World Family and In the Kitchen. But, what happens when a fight breaks out during a so-called fun activity? “Remember that on average, kids ages 3 to 7 will engage in about 3.5 conflicts an hour. It’s normal, it’s natural,” says Heather in the article on her website, What if they’re not getting along during some “sibling fun?”

For more articles, podcasts and information on the book and workshops, go to Heather and Lisa’s busy website: BusySiblings.com.

Did you like this podcast? One diet in particular is the gluten-free, casein-free diet that can help kids with autism. It’s not a cure per se, but the diet does help soothe certain behaviors, according to moms and experts.

One mom who knows first hand about the benefits of the gluten-free, casein-free diet is Lynn Yeager, co-founder of Cookie Momsters, a Florida- based dessert company that makes and sells cookies and muffins for autistic and allergy prone kids.

This week’s podcast features an interview with Lynn, who talks about her struggles with her son, Jacob, all of the different cookies and muffins at her store front and online bakery, and the recent controversial report refuting the gluten-free, casein-free diet (ABC News, Jan. 5, 2010) as a solution for autism.

Cookie Momsters is a great resource for parents who need gluten-free, casein-free cookies, which you can order for everyday living or for special occasions. Even “civilian” moms can order these products because they taste great, are healthy, and make a great option when inviting autistic or food allergy children to your house for a birthday party or playdate. In fact, one in 110 children today have autism, according to Autism Speaks.

To order the cookies and muffins, go to Cookie Momsters.com. You can also get recipes, blog and other pertinent information.

Cookie Momsters products are available in select Whole Foods and other specialty markets in Florida. Go the website to find a location. If you want Cookie Momsters in a food store near you, print out the pre-made form at the Cookie Momsters website and bring it into your store today (scroll all the way to the bottom on the home page).

Other sites that Lynn suggests are: Talk About Curing Autism Now, which is put together by moms to help you get started with the gluten-free, casein-free diet, and Allergy Kids.com.

Subscribe to MommaJam today. Did you know that about 90 percent of physical and psychological abuse against women occurs in the home or by someone you know. If you are in trouble, please tune into this podcast or call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE or 1-800-799-7233, which offers anonymous and confidential help 24/7.

We also talk about thwarting stranger danger and using tools like pre-programmed coded messages in your cell phone to signal for help in the event of an emergency.

At what age do you tell kids about “icky people” who could be strangers, family or friends? Robin offers ideas for talking to your toddlers, youngsters, tweens and teens, so that they can learn how to protect themselves.

Robin is an amazing, informative guest. She appears frequently on national television to comment on current cases that make most people change the channel. Her mission is to make violence against women and children a subject matter that is comfortable to talk about, so that it’s easier for victims to get help and to prevent predator crimes in the first place.

For useful articles mentioned in the podcast, check out:

- Marie Claire, featuring Robin’s tips to combat “Stranger Danger”

- Dr. Phil’s “Top Five Ways for Parents to Protect Children”

You can also get Robin’s SaxFacts Weekly and check out her website, Robin Sax.com for more information. We go head-to-head in a “he said-she said” review of four movies: “District 9” and “The Informant,” both of which are playing in theaters now, and “10,000 B.C.” and “He’s Just Not That Into You,” which are on DVD or on demand.

During the podcast, we give ratings to each movie - five stars being the best - and critique everything from plot to directing to casting. For instance, did first-time director Neill Blomkamp intentionally set “District 9” in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was Matt Damon miscast as the lead character in “The Informant?” Is “10,000 B.C.” a decent date night movie or a bust? This is a great site to bookmark and check out daily for tips, step by step directions, and short articles that cover digital cameras, computers and software, social networking, fashion (yes, fashion), audio and video, health and home, and family and kids. All articles are for Macintosh and PC systems and written with women in mind.

To give you a tour of Techlicious, MommaJam talked to Suzanne Kantra, founder and editor-in-chief. If there is anyone who is the perfect tech-talk person for moms it’s Suzanne, who was a technology editor at Popular Science and then the technology correspondent at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She knows how to make technology simple and enjoyable to use and understand.

This in-depth interview touches on key computer issues that every parent needs to know, such as going green with electronics and how to properly back up your computer. I know first hand what it’s like to lose critical data because I slacked off on backing up my new Macintosh (try losing 2,000 photos of my new baby’s first year of life), so definitely listen to this podcast to get tips from a pro on making your home computer safe, secure and backed up.

Suzanne is a great guest and invaluable resource. You can also go to Techlicious.com for your daily dose of technology.

Thanks for listening to MommaJam.

I doubt it! Any mother knows parenting is tough work and slacking is not an option. But, every once in a while we do need a break. A great way to get mental reprieve is by tuning into Slacker, a new personal Internet radio service from San Diego-based Slacker, Inc.

Check out this interview with Slacker’s Jonathan Sasse, who explains exactly what personal Internet radio is, how you can get it on your iPhone, Blackberry or computer, and all of the extensive bells and whistles you can get for free and for an upgrade fee.

The best time for Slacker is when you’re exercising or in the car by yourself or with the kids. It’s a great application for when you are biking, running or doing anything where you don’t want to fiddle with or jostle between playlists. I am notorious for jumping around playlists during a work out and it’s tedious. I also get tired of my own playlists, so Slacker is an ideal option. I can try out new music genres and songs that I don’t want to pay money for initially. If you really like a song, you can touch a button that bumps you into iTunes to purchase it.

Slacker also has a feature that let’s you block explicit language, so you’ll never get busted blasting songs with swear words by your children. Plus, there is a whole section with kids music.

Just plug in your iPhone or Blackberry, launch your downloaded Slacker app, and you’re ready to start jamming. To get started,
go to Slacker.com.

Props to Slacker for turning to controversial, contemporary artist Shepard Fairey to create its fantastic company logo, which has a rocker/surfer feel to it. Love that symbol! I want a sticker version for my son’s skimboard. Maybe the company will start merchandising the logo, at least for the Slacker Moms.

Love that symbol! I want a sticker version for my son’s skimboard. Maybe the company will start merchandising the logo, at least for the Slacker Moms.</itunes:summary>

Needed? Yes!

Ahhh... the games moms play to get their kids to nap... or not. If you need help getting your child into lullaby mode quickly and easily then check out this podcast with child sleep expert Elizabeth Pantley. Elizabeth is like an old friend giving gentle, practical tips on daytime slumber. She gives a preview of her latest book, “The No-Cry Nap Solution,” which provides encouragement for the best nap experience for you and your little one.

Most moms can’t live without naptime - it’s the only time to get things done or have a sane moment during the day. It’s a chance for caregivers to recharge and get collected. Do you intend to bring your own “green” bags grocery shopping only to realize at the check out line you’ve forgotten the bags and have to stock pile yet another 20 plastic bags? Do you ask for “paper” not plastic bags thinking they are more biodegradable?

One company that is bagging plastic is Blue Avocado, which makes super cool reusable grocery bags in stylish, funky and totally functional designs. This week’s podcast features Melissa Nathan, a Blue Avocado founder who talks about all of the different types of bags available and why she is a partner is this forward-thinking, determined company.

I test drove Blue Avocado bags for a couple of weeks and my absolute favorite is the Pod. The Pod is genius. It’s this little blob of a bag that unfolds into a big bag to carry a bunch of groceries. I actually carry three Pods in my purse because up until recently I kept forgetting to bring my reusable grocery bags into the store with me. With Pods, I can offer up at least a few of my own bags. Lately, I’ve been so excited to shop with the my new pink Blue Avocado bags that I’ve been diligent about carrying in my own bags. The color is so vibrant that people standing behind me in line and the check out personnel make flattering comments. Blue Avocado bags are definite conversation makers.

The entire Blue Avocado system includes myriad bags, such as an insulated bag for dairy and other perishables and a net bag for vegetables. Right now the color options are blue, hot pink, brown and green, but more styles are on the way and will be announced later this spring. Last week, I used the insulated Chil bag on a road trip, and I am tempted to use the Gro bag for my gym gear because it’s so sturdy and spacious.

Blue Avocado is serious about its effort to clean up plastic in the world. Every bag has a label in it that tells you how many bags you’ve eliminated and the carbon footprint. With one Pod alone, you’ll save yourself from recycling or tossing 200 plastic bags, per year (or 1,000 bag per year if you use the entire Blue Avocado system). Multiply that by millions and you get a grim look at how much junk is on our earth just from fulfilling a basic need like grocery shopping.

Perk up the planet and strut down the aisle in style with Blue Avocado bags. Check out the above podcast and go to BlueAvocado.com to purchase online or to find store locations near you.

Thanks for listening to MommaJam.

In fact, 70 percent of its products are completely unpackaged, including the shampoo. Yes, you heard it right, shampoo. Check out LUSH’s solid blocks of shampoos like the “Ultimate Shine Solid Shampoo” and think about saving three plastic 8 ounce bottles for every bar you use on your hair.

To give you an insiders look at the company, MommaJam talks with Jennifer Graybeal from LUSH. Jen was 9 months pregnant when we recorded the interview, so she know first hand which products feel good for new and expectant mothers. We talked extensively about my favorite naked soap bar, the “Buffy” which exfoliates and moisturizes at the same time. This product is genius. It scrubs off dead cells and leaves skin soft and silky.

Jen also suggest products for kids, such as the “King of Skin Body Butter,” “Dream Cream Body Cream” and “Devil and Angel Bath Bombs.” For grown ups, Jen recommends “Emotibombs,” which are like the company’s bath bombs, but go on your shower floor, emitting soothing or revitalizing aromas when warm water hits them.

Check out LUSHusa.com for more information about all of the products, natural ingredients, sales and promotions, shopping online or finding retail stores near your home.

You’ll love LUSH!

<itunes:summary>LUSHious body, hair and skin products from LUSH are now in the U.S. This cool, innovative company from London makes all of its fresh soaps and natural cosmetics by hand and shuns product packaging. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2009 celebrating mother’s all over the world. Today’s podcast features Heather Kempskie, editor of Parents and Kids magazine. Heather and I chat about upcoming articles, guides and all of the tremendous resources in Parents and Kids, plus future podcasts planned for MommaJam.

One major aspect of today’s podcast includes doing a body scan from head to toe inside and out, and booking the appropriate medical appointments you need to ensure a healthy body. For instance, if you need a new eyeglass prescription, go ahead and make that optometrist appointment today. On the outside, if you need new makeup, underwear or a manicure, take the time you need to get these things done. They’re not frivolous! Moms need personal time to refresh and invigorate.

We also dish about healthy eating and an interesting article in the December 2008 issue of Self magazine, which reports on the wide use of arsenic in chicken feed to fatten up supermarket fowl. Check out the article online if you haven’t seen it, plus the rebuttal comments, and decide for yourself if you will ever again buy non-organic chicken. Personally, why take the risk when organic chicken is so readily available and affordable.

Thanks for listening to MommaJam.

By now, we’re tossing any old leftover into the lunch box just to arrive to school on time. Jennifer inspires moms to think healthy and get back into planning and packing nutritious meals for kids.

One great way to eat healthy is to shop healthy. The American Heart Association has a cool online tool that lets you create a shopping list based on foods that are certified by the organization as low in cholesterol and low in fat. The online tool and program is called Heart Check Mark and reminds me of the Intel Inside campaign. If you see food at the grocery store with the American Heart Association’s Heart Check Mark, then you know it’s good for you.

The next time you need to make a grocery list, start at www.heartcheckmark.org, and look for foods all through your grocery store that are stamped with the heart check mark logo. You can add your own food items to the list, as well.

To stay active and energized during the year’s biggest party month, Jen suggests you lap the mall as you shop, park as far away as possible when gift buying and boost up the volume on the radio to dance and sing while setting up decorations with your kids. This summer, the event features more than 13 musical guests with a few surprise performances that are guaranteed perks for the grownups (think big, big!).

Today’s podcast features Tor Hyams, co-creator of Kidzapalooza, which he founded with former Jane’s Addiction front man Perry Farrell. In the interview, Tor gives you a backstage tour of all the exciting entertainment and activities lined up, from getting temporary tatz or a punk rock hair do to jamming out rock band style and throwing down a hip hop rhyme. This three day weekend experience is a blast, and lets you explore music in totally interactive way.

For the first time ever, Kidzapalooza will expand to another city: Los Angeles. The event debuts at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, Sept. 28, so if you can’t make it to the Windy City, bring your family to the City of Angels for a rockin’ good time.

Check out the MommaJam podcast with Tor and book your flight to Chicago for Kidzapalooza, the hottest summer festival around. This week, MommaJam talks to Ames Ingham, a home decorator, store owner and fellow mom, to give you inspiring, new ways to infuse life and energy into your home.

Ames joins us from her hip furnishings store in West Hollywood (pictured above), the heart of LA’s cool home decor district. This home style maven loves mixing fresh white spaces with bold colors for contrast.

To help combat kids with messy fingers, Ames recommends using outdoor fabric for indoor spaces. Some of today’s great new patterns and textures help hide smudges, and the durable fabrics are easy to clean. Other ideas include using chalkboard paint, so kids have their own, distinct place to doodle on the walls. You can get chalkboard paint at hardware stores or even at Target. Crayola makes the paint in myriad colors, so you can go wild with fun for your kids.

Tune in and listen to MommaJam and Ames Ingham. Then tackle clutter and reclaim beauty in your home sweet home.
Yes, the print version is local, but the online version is available to all moms and dads, and is packed with terrific articles that are relevant to your everyday life with kids.

One special article now running is, “Top 10 Ways to Have a Romantic Valentine’s Day,” written by Sara Eberle, host of MommaJam. In today’s podcast show, Heather and Sara dish about amorous tip #11, which is to make a rock and roll love song CD for your sweetheart. Make it meaningful, but make it edgy and loud. Two recommended songs are the bone chilling and soulful “Sideways” on Santana’s Shaman album and the world famous “Panama” (ah, ah, ah, ah, ah) by Van Halen, which has racy lyrics that say, “I love you” like a rock star.

Below is a link to the Parents and Kids site, plus a few other helpful links talked about in the podcast that put positive parenting resources at your fingertips.

Parentsandkids.net is the Parents and Kids website. Two recommended songs are the bone chilling and soulful “Sideways” on Santana’s Shaman album and the world famous “Panama” (ah, ah, ah, ah, ah) by Van Halen, which has racy lyrics that say, “I love you” like a rock star.Below is a link to the Parents and Kids site, plus a few other helpful links talked about in the podcast that put positive parenting resources at your fingertips.Parentsandkids.net is the Parents and Kids website.
