The students and faculty of the University of Maryland School of Law welcome you to the webpage for the Law School Softball Team.  The most important things to know about the team are that everyone in the law school is welcome to play and it is the most fun you can have while participating in a law school function.  There are several different levels of competition. 

The 2011 DC Area Regional Law School Softball tournament was held on Saturday Nov. 12, 2011 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  The tournament included 16 teams from area law schools.  Maryland advanced to the semifinals before losing to a team from Georgetown.  In the consolation round Maryland beat George Mason to win third place. Each fall, the veteran members of the team organize and host a 1L softball tournament where each of the first year small sections is invited to enter a team.  The 2011 1L Tournament was held at Clifton Park on Saturday October 22.  More than 200 students from each of the first year small sections competed in the tournament, which was won for the third year in a row by Section C which defeated Section D in the championship game.  A photo album with 117 photos of the 2011 tournament is available HERE (also see the “1L Tournament” section of this website).

The high point of every year is the UVA National Law School Softball Tournament.  More than 100 teams from 60 law schools usually compete in this competition, which had been dominated by UVA until Maryland defeated them in the semifinals in 2007 by rallying for 11 runs in the bottom of the last inning.  In 2009 Maryland sent four teams to the UVA Tournament, three in the coed division.  Maryland Black came from behind to upset UVA Gold in the coed semifinals before losing to Appalachian in the championship game. Maryland Red made it to the Round of 16 before losing to UVA Blue.  An album of photos from the 2009 tournament can be viewed HERE.  The 28th annual UVA Tournament was held on April 1-3, 2011.  All three of Maryland’s (Maryland Red and Maryland Black in the coed division and Maryland Black in the men’s division) advanced to the elimination rounds.  Maryland Red reached the Elite Eight after defeating Rutgers and New England and winning by forfeit in the 7AM game against hard-partying before losing to UVA Blue.  Maryland Black advanced to the Round of 32 with a walk-off win in extra innings against Villanova, but then lost a close game to Suffolk. COUNTDOWN TO UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINA NATIONAL LAW SCHOOL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

During some summers the law school competes in the Intra-Professional Athletic Conference (IPAC), a summer lawyer’s league in Baltimore.  The school plays teams from the major law firms and government legal offices in Baltimore as well as our friends from the University of Baltimore Law School. The school finished the 2011 season with an 8-3 record, which earned it third place in the league.
