THE EAST VILLAGE
THE EAST VILLAGE
2009
Even Austin, what many consider a progressive environmentally-conscious city, has been and continues to grow in an unsustainable way. Sprawl, strip malls, and our stretched infrastructure is at a breaking point. Like a growing cancer, sprawl is now attacking the heart of our city, its budgets, it thruways, its affordability. And this is happening around the globe at a breakneck pace.
The good news is people all over the world are turning this around by retooling their cities for sustainability. This means re-inventing the built environment in compatible and better ways to accommodate growth while preserving the natural environment in and around the city. It means reducing vehicle trips by locating everything a community needs within walking, biking, and transit distance. It means utilizing technology to build the most efficient buildings free from contaminants and that can harness the sun and wind for power, heating and cooling. It means providing flexible living and working spaces so that families of all sizes, persuasions, and incomes can coexist in all our neighborhoods. And it means providing a physical community for creative and passionate minds to meet, play, collaborate, and spread the ideas of a more sustainable life to the world.
The East Village is our experiment for how far we can go to create a community that is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. Join us.
A Sustainable Life
Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address, January 20, 2009
What is Sustainability?
Then I say the earth belongs to each generation during its own course, fully and in its own right; but no generation can contract debts greater than can be paid during the course of its own existence.
