Cripple Creek Cloggers has been in existence since October of 1982. Formed by 10 square dancers who thought they’d like to incorporate some clogging steps into their formations, the clogging became more popular than the square dancing and we began to advertise for more members. As we learned more about clogging, we held classes and at one time increased our membership to 74. We currently have about 45 members of which 21 perform publicly.
We have no age limitations (8-10 seems to be our youngest). As dancers progress they might desire to try their hand at teaching others. We have anywhere from one to five instructors at different times, and we meet once a week.
We participate in 60-70 performances a year, usually 30-45 minutes (10-11 routines) in that time. We try to choose four new songs each summer for our parades, but for shows we draw from a core list of 27 which we can perform at any time. We also have four Christmas routines for our winter performances. We do not enter competitions. Our top eight dancers have been with the club for 20-25 years.
Our reason for clogging is foremost for social interaction with the community. Believe it or not there are still people out there who have never seen clogging and they still are impressed. Even though we perform at the same venues year after year, the enthusiasm never wanes. Our group finds great satisfaction in pleasing our audiences. The exercise and joy we give ourselves is immeasurable.
