The Brilliant Green
The Brilliant Green is one of Japan’s premier alternative rock bands. Their unique sound sets them apart from most of the other bands around the country, as their music has a very heavy western influence from classic groups like The Beatles. Many songs are in English, and each one is stylistically different than the others, offering varied tempos and moods.
The band, often referred to as "BuriGuri," was formed in 1995 by guitarist Ryo Matsui and bassist Shunsaku Okuda, who brought in singer Tomoko Kawase (Tommy) after seeing her perform at a local bar. In 1997, the band inked a deal with Sony Music Japan based on the strength of a demo tape recorded at Okuda's home, releasing their debut maxi single Bye Bye Mr. Mug in the fall of the same year.
While the first single did not sell well, the second, Goodbye and Good Luck fared better. The band hit the jackpot with their third single, There Will Be Love There, released in May of 1998. The track debuted at #14 on the Oricon charts, eventually reaching the #1 slot, and was featured in the television drama Love Again. Their fourth single, Tsumetai Hana, also hit #1, making it two in a row. September, 1998 saw the release of the band's first eponymous first album, which reached #2 on the Oricon album charts. Success continued for the band, and subsequent albums Terra 2001 and Los Angeles also fared well on the charts, with the former debuting at #2.
In 2001, Kawase debuted as a solo artist under the moniker of Tommy february6, a venture initially done on a lark that catapulted her even further into the spotlight. On December 4, 2002, the group released their fourth album, titled "The Winter Album." It sounded more like their first two albums, as opposed to "Los Angeles;" however, they experimented a bit more with the inclusion of a drum machine and backbeats on some tracks. They followed its release with a small club and university tour.
Afterward, Tomoko once again went back to her Tommy february6 gig, releasing "je ta'ime je ta'ime," "Love is forever," and "Magic In Your Eyes." Following this, she branched off yet again with "Tommy heavenly6," a somewhat punk-rock act, with the single "Wait till I can dream." After that, she released her second Tommy february6 album, "Tommy Airline."
Following a relationship that grew during their time together in The Brilliant Green, Tommy and Shunsaku announced their marriage on November 22, 2003. At the same time, Ryo announced his earlier marriage to A-San, a jewelry designer.
Since then, Ryo has branched off into his own project entitled "Meister," and Tommy heavenly6 released a few more singles, and eventually a full-length album on August 24, 2005.
Whether The Brilliant Green would ever put out another album or not remained uncertain, until August 22, 2007. The Brilliant Green then announced to be back in action again, releasing a new album named Stand By Me. They still remain active, having already released two new singles: Enemy and Ash Like Snow, having the last one used as the opening theme to the anime series “Gundam 00”.
