  1. MEREDITH BAXTER TO NARRATE RAINBOW DOC

Emmy-nominated actress, author and activist Meredith Baxter will narrate the eagerly awaited documentary, Raid of the Rainbow Lounge, directed by Robert L. Camina.

On June 28, 2009 (the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots), city police and agents from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission raided a newly opened gay bar in Fort Worth, resulting in multiple arrests and serious injuries. The events of June 28, sparked a historic chain of events in Fort Worth, igniting an unprecedented wave of activism, turning the tragedy into groundbreaking civic and social change.

The documentary is a 102-minute recount of the events surrounding the controversial raid and its roller coaster aftermath. The film features interviews from many eyewitnesses of the raid, leaders and members of local gay activist groups, local politicians, including Fort Worth's first openly gay city councilman, Joel Burns as well as many staff members of QCinema.

A full trailer for the film will be released in late January 2012. QCinema will present the world premiere of Raid of the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth early next year, with a date and venue to be announced.

•  QCINEMA CHOSEN AS BEST FILM SERIES

Tarrant County’s oldest alternative newspaper, Fort Worth Weekly chose QCinema as this year’s recipient for Best Film Series. The paper’s write-up said: “Is it really possible that we’ve never given Q this award? (Technically, we tied for audience choice for Best Film Series back in 2006, but who’s counting?) What started out as an annual film festival has expanded into a monthly series with an inclusive spirit that takes in all facets of the LGBT community. The series, which usually splits time between Four Day Weekend Theater and Rose Marine Theater, is known not merely for the films themselves, but also as a gathering place and rallying point for Tarrant County’s gay culture.”

QLive!’s It Only Makes Me Laugh open mic comedy night also got a nice tip of the hat in the Best Gay or Lesbian Bar write-up for Percussions.

On behalf of everyone at QCinema and QLive!, thanks to the writers, editors and readers of Fort Worth Weekly for this much-appreciated honor. It makes the slow climb toward next year’s 14th annual film festival that much easier.
