Every semester I try to present a variety of perspectives. Students in the Introduction to Broadcasting class (COM-141) were fortunate to hear from Andalusia Knoll, Station Support Director at the Radio Prometheus Project.

Knoll is enthusiastic in her work which focuses on helping local residents organize and build low-power radio stations. In class, Knoll talked about the importance of activism; to have a voice for low-power radio in America and around the world. The audio clip you are listening to is a version of the information she presented to students. In this Podcast she also mentions how you can help out.

According to their Wikipedia site Radio Prometheus is a “non-profit advocacy and community organizing group committed to building an inclusive and representative media landscape in the United States and around the world. Their primary focus has been to create a large community of low power community radio stations and listeners that will grow into a powerful force working toward a more democratic media future.”

Here is their web site http://prometheusradio.org/
Going to the open house is important for students and I enjoy it too. I get a chance each spring and fall to meet some very bright people. At the open house last fall I talked with Megan Brown.

(the photo is not Megan Brown)

Brown is finishing up her studies at Audubon High School and may already have made her decision on where to go to college. Brown keeps busy writing for her high school newspaper and she has plans to continue with activities when she goes to college. Brown is making an intelligent choice toward a successful career. The media industry needs intelligent and thoughtful people like Meagan Brown.

When you go to college as a Communications or Media major you must get involved in extra activities, even if it is only a few hours each week. CCC has 91.5 WDBK-FM and The Campus Press newspaper as student media outlets that offer an opportunity to learn outside the classroom. Learning outside the classroom gives you an opportunity to work in a competitive and collaborative environment. It is important to learn outside the classroom because employers EXPECT it. You learn by making mistakes. Employers recognize students that are willing to learn, that can learn from their mistakes, are valuable employees.
