This video marks the first in a series of talks Ogden gave at conferences (well first in the series of videos I have*). The videos capture Og at his finest - in front of crowd speaking with passion for his subject matter. While many PTers may not know about quality navigation Og wrote a few papers on the subject and spoke about the topic at various conferences.

*The videos actually came from Steve Graf. I received a nice gift of VCR tapes from Steve and digitized them.

Reference: Lindsley, O. R. (1992, May). Quality Navigation (tm): Standard Celeration Charting in Total Quality Management. In C. V. Binder (Chair), Behavior Analysis in Total Quality Management (Section 2). Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Association for Behavior Analysis, San Francisco, CA.

I met Ogden Lindsley, Og as he would have you call him, in 1993 at the ABA conference in Chicago. I recall being very nervous when I first met him. This was Ogden Richardson Lindsley. And I was talking to him! I can’t remember the substance of our conversation but I do recall calling my wife that evening and telling her I met someone famous.

In the years that would follow I would move from a masters student, to a doctoral student, to a Professor. And all through that time Og would graciously speak with me at conferences, on the phone, and through email helping shape many of my thoughts as they pertained to Precision Teaching and science. I learned much through our interactions. Og could be arrestingly specific, deeply passionate, exceptionally funny, and at times, unsparingly direct.

Beyond our conversations and what I learned from him, I developed a great appreciation for Og the man. He was a war hero, an icon in psychology and education, a devoted father and husband, and to those especially fortunate and privileged, a friend. As a person devoted to science and Og’s vision of a better world, I have this website and much of my professional work standing as a testament to his ideals and teachings. I miss Og and hope that the tribute video I pulled together brings a smile to your face.

I think Og would have liked that!

I have watched Carl Binder countless times in workshops and conference presentations. As a speaker even if you have heard him before you go back again because you will keep learning new things. Also, as a graduate student I remember reading his behavioral fluency article which greatly impacted me professionally. Needless to say I am a charter member in the Binder fan-club! This interview, done in May of 2002, marked the first time I ever interviewed anyone so another thanks to Carl for his patience with me.

Interview. I asked Carl the following questions:

1. What role does Precision Teaching play in schools?
2. What are unique features of PT compared to other progress monitoring systems?
3. How do you define fluency and what role does it have in the classroom?
4. How should fluency aims be set?
5. Can fluency aims be set nationally?
6. Can you define REAPS?
7. Please talk more about endurance?
8. Can you talk about application and contrast it with generalization?
9. Follow up question to application concept.
10. Can you discuss REAPS and other acronyms?

Postscript. Talk about some excellent answers! As an educator I always have my focus on what can we do to help students (with PT). Carl really had some nice answers. He also defines PT not as fluency only, but as a measurement system. I like hearing that definition because it demonstrates PT’s big umbrella and those who wish to focus on fluency can do very well within a PT framework. However, using PT to measure behavior for other reasons can also occur in the Precision Teaching system. Thanks for a great interview Carl!
