2011 Student Photography Exhibition

Preservation LINK’s annual student exhibition, Through the Eyes of Our Children—Something Beautiful showcases the written and visual artworks of students from several elementary schools in the South Dallas/Fair Park area of the Dallas Independent School District. Inspired to embrace their imagination and vision, students use words, photography, and mixed media to create works that convey the HOPES & DREAMS they have for themselves, their community, and society.

Preservation LINK partners with the

Harvey B. Gantt Center and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools

In the Fall 2011, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture partnered with Preservation LINK, Inc. (PLI) to bring PLI’s Visual Literacy Workshop curriculum to students within, 4th grade classrooms at Bruns Academy and University Park Creative Arts Elementary School.
While engaging students in the complete process of art making, this project also included creative and narrative writing, reviews and critiques of artwork, and academic, personal and social exploration. This project was made possible, in part, with funding from the Arts & Science Council, the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art. The students used artwork by Romare Bearden to explore concepts of message and meaning and the use of words, images, texture, shapes and colors as storytelling elements.
In addition to class sessions conducted at each school, the students and their teachers visited the Gantt Center for guided tours of the Bearden Centennial exhibitions to learn more about Romare Bearden’s life and artistry and the artists who have been inspired by Mr. Bearden. During their visit, the students also participated in a watercolor painting workshop conducted in the Gantt’s Learning Center.

Student exhibition opens Friday, January 13, 2012. Visit the Harvey B. Gantt Center at 551 S. Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. Join us on Facebook to see more program images at https://www.facebook.com/i.like.PreservationLINK.
