U.S. Representative Jim Cooper

605 Church Street

Nashville, TN  37219

Dear Representative Cooper,

We join the majority of Americans to ask that you support a national, universal  health care plan. Some would like us to believe that we should maintain the current dysfunctional system because we cannot afford universal health care. Certainly, the United States has as many resources as every other industrialized nation that provides its citizens with universal health care. Surely, Americans are worthy of decent health care.

We have seen the failure of Kerr-Mills which gave individual grants to states, before Medicare started. We have seen the inherent problems with Tenncare which subsidized individual for-profit HMOs. We have seen the difficulties of the recent program that requires Massachusetts residents to buy health insurance. Allowing private insurance companies to compete as a way to bring down the cost of insurance has backfired horribly as rates skyrocket and individuals with pre-existing conditions are refused coverage entirely. We must learn from these mistakes, not make them all over again with compromise bills that benefit the insurance companies, burden the middle and low income tax payers and in the end only protect some of our citizens.

As a U. S. Representative, you have a fiduciary responsibility to your constituents. It is clear that we cannot continue to pay out an estimated $400 billion in annual overhead and bureaucracy to for-profit, private health insurance companies, continue tax breaks for the wealthiest 1% and provide health care for all. Which is why it is important to implement a single payer universal health care system, not a hobbled together compromise. Health care costs can be reduced with a comprehensive, universal plan that includes preventative health care, prenatal care, single payer simplified billing, encouraging the use of generic drugs, addiction treatment and mental health care.

Forty four years ago, legislators could have resorted to partisan bickering and stood in the way of the passage of Medicare. Instead, Medicare is their legacy that has prevented much unnecessary suffering and poverty among our elderly for over four decades. The time has come to create a new legacy of Medicare-for-All and extend that access to health care to all of our citizens. A healthy, educated population is critical to a strong and stable nation.
