Caring for our future
Dear Parents and Friends,
Bushfire Risks
As expected Ferny Creek Primary has been included on the Fire Risk register developed for Victorian schools. Inclusion on the register means that there is a predetermined trigger for notifying parents or carers that we may be pre-emptively closed in the event that a Code Red Fire Danger Warning is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for our district.
A bushfire kit/has been distributed to all residents to assist in preparing for emergency or bushfire threat. More information on the specifics of school closures will be distributed in following newsletters.
Working Bee
Thank you to the parents who attended the working bee last Sunday. It’s not been easy keeping our grounds tidy with the building projects going on over the past few months. There will be one whole school working bee prior to our Christmas Concert.
Prep Transition
Our 2010 Prep classes have had their first school orientation session last Friday. It was very exciting for these new 2010 students and we are very much looking forward to their next visit in a few weeks. The next session is on Friday 27th November. Our Parent Information Night is on Monday 7th December. I’m excited!!!
Parent Contribution Payment Day
All families should have received their notification of Parent Contributions earlier this month. Please call the school office if you have not received yours to date. First Payment Day is on Friday 27th November. You may collect your child’s packs of 2010 supplies from the office.
Grade Letters – Last Call
Again, as mentioned in past newsletters, I need all special requests for 2010 in to me by the last day of November. Staff will then be asking for student friendship requests and placing children in their 2010 grades. This process takes a long time and we all put a huge amount of thought into every placement. Your letter is no guarantee but, if based on legitimate educational needs, we will certainly try our best.
Play Issues
A reminder to all that we do take all occurrences of real or perceived bullying and harassment seriously. Did you know that?
At each staff meeting we agenda time to talk about issues relating to our students – the aim of this is to build an awareness with staff and students that all of us are responsible for each other, that each of us cares about all FC children, not just ‘my 22 in my class’.
We have developed a set of agreed practices (revised each year) in the areas of, a) student welfare and behaviour, b) curriculum delivery and c) school administration. The Student Welfare practices will ensure that each staff member knows what the expectations are in all areas of the school and, conversely, the students know what is expected of them in all areas of the school. These are on permanent display in the staffroom.
Besides taking action with the bully and victim we spend a lot of time empowering the ‘bystanders’. By this I mean empowering the students to not stand back and watch their friend get harassed and/or empowering the friends of the child doing the harassing to say, ’No’. This is not easy and can take a long time to make the behaviour automatic.
All classes have a set of Rules and Consequences that are the same, in meaning, from Prep to Year 6. Along with this, all grades from Year 3 to 6 have an agreed class contract on what they want their learning environment to be in their classroom. This is again giving students ownership of their learning.
We will not always solve every issue – but I assure our community that we will continue trying really hard until we do!
Long Service Leave
Well I survived - just, best thing about the hike were the breaks, rested up in Ko Samui to be ready to start again Monday. Now it’s Warren’s turn for long service leave, Warren will be returning 8th December, don’t worry the fish of Australia will be safe.

Matthew
