UP BEAT!

SNOW!
Snow in the desert. Like mana from heaven.
Mana fed bodies according to The Good Book. Kept wondering Israelites alive in the desert when starvation seemed certain.
Snow feeds AV souls. Driven Antelope Valley souls.
Forces peace on them for a few hours. Forced slowdown.
People trapped in their cars on Freeway #14 won't agree with me because they couldn't get home or on their way north or south.
Not cool. But very cool sleeping overnight parked in your car.
Snow on December 17th, 2008, forced even those drivers to slow down along with everyone else for a few hours. Nothing anybody can do about it.
No more 70 mile an hour pace back and forth. A little rest. Time for an unexpected latte.
Some people even lost electrical power like we did on Wednesday night. Snow and no lights. I called ahead from my office at 6pm to ask if I should stop by the market for anything on my way home, in case we couldn't get back out for a couple days.

My two morning papers didn't come so I had to read my AMERICAN JOURNALISM REVIEW about how weekly newspapers continue to grow while big dailies give up people to web publications. Maybe...it's still easier and faster to skim headlines on print. True, it costs a whole lot more to deliver print to my breakfast table like we're doing it now... Maybe a little printer next to our coffee maker with headlines and web sites to follow up. Snow slowdowns make dreaming dreams like this possible for a few hours. Our road's not plowed out yet. Too much snow. Might as well read another article.
Watch those silent flakes floating down. Dream.
Slowdown.
Rest.
Snow.

"No, I can't think of anything," Gayle came back, "It think we're good."
She probably looked at a five day weather forecast last Saturday on her iPhone and bought ahead in case we got snowed in like years past.
"Our electricity is out too. On our whole block, but I have chicken soup warming up in our fireplace. And candles, It's kinda' cozy here."
Women simply have too much power! Snow makes me realize this fact of life. Women think too far ahead. By the time men get there the deal's been done. Know what I mean? I got in my car wondering about being in an emergency snow condition! She's warming up soup.
Kids love snow. It means snow days. School's shut down. Time to haul out sleds or make some up out of cardboard boxes. Snowball fights. Snow persons (snowmen to some still). Then come in for lunch soaked, blue, tired, hungry, blushed full of excitement at a break in their learning routine.
Jennifer Joyce (center) performed a solo on December 19, 2008. at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center with Antelope Valley Master Choral and Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra. AVC Professors Dr. Kim and Dr. Newby arranged and conducted.
