Ken Robinson: Out of our MInds
In November of this year I had the privilege to work with Sir Ken Robinson at the Summit of the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE). During lunch he said to me: “I had a chance to visit your website. You are doing some very interesting things. Let’s stay in touch.” To which I replied: “Thank you. I think your work is fabulous and it would be my pleasure to work with you.” And then we traded cards and chatted some more. So, since I had not yet read his books I decided that would be a good place to start.
I just finished “Out Of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative” and I must say that it is a must read. So to whet your appetite, here are 10 points that I thought very useful, interesting, compelling, and some are funny.
1)page 3, Everyone has creative abilities, but they often do not know what they are.
2)page 4, We are caught up in a social and economic revolution.
3)page 37, The interaction of genetics, neuroscience and information systems makes it feasible to think seriously about computer-enhanced intelligence.
4)page 66, Academic - the term derives from the name of a grove near ancient Athens called Academeia.
5)page 81, Academic ability is not the same as intelligence.
6)page 89, The Corporate University
7)page 107, Academics tend to be disembodied.
8)page 171, We do not have creative ideas in a vacuum.
9)page 182, Cultural change is not linear and smooth.
10)page 193, Culture change is a process not an event.
I suggest that as a primer, what the TED conference video:
