Paul Syme came to Nova Scotia in 1996 to do his MA In Art Education at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. After completing his NSCAD residency, Paul was assigned to an art teaching position at the new to be built technology infused Horton High School (opened 1998). Paul is now also the Arts Education Consultant for the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board.

Paul has dedicated much of his studies and practice into bringing together the pedagogies of traditional touch-media art and the paradigm of new electronic media. This pedagogical focus and experience has helped Paul to co-write five provincial curriculum documents (Design 11; Vis. Art 11, & 12; and Advanced Vis. Art 11 & 12) as well as a textbook (Art3: Multimedia Art Design).

As an arts education consultant, Paul works to elevate the success and relevance of the arts in the minds and experiences of students and the greater community.

As the Arts Education Consultant for the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board, Paul works to improve the profile and impact of the arts in the lives of students. The Research is abundant and clear that a comprehensive arts curricula brings with it potent consequences on student engagement, life and academic success. Through rich multi-sensory experiences and student centered content, the arts can help students connect to their learning in deep and meaningful ways. With this in mind, Paul hopes to see more teachers integrating the arts into more subjects.

WebsiteforLearning.com is a site created to aid generalist and specialist teachers as well as administrators in the creation and maintanence of a effective websites that encourage student achievement and a healthy school community. This has been a growing project for Paul and Scott Bennett since 1998

A clear and relevant classroom website can break beyond an online filing cabinent. It can support student growth through content that students find rich, dynamic and meaningful without having to hire a pro to build the site. Paul and Scott can help you and your staff build these sites.

After the success of Holy Angels HS (Sydney NS) Fine Arts Certificate, teachers in the AVRSB sought to design their own FAC. In 2006, as the Fine Arts Consultant, Paul took the work done to date, fleshed-out the FA certificate process and designed the final document.

Now, students in the AVRSB can a FA certificate with 5 Arts credits and 12 majour projects.

Teaching Visual Arts involves designing units that lead students to develop sklls with a range of media & processes; making compositional decissions; and building sensitivites and values towards the treatment of their artwork and that of others. This guide attempts to identify and clarify such componants for desiging rigorous and relevant art units.

Art 3: Multimedia Art and Design came from the success of Design 11. This complete course guide and workbook is available for teachers who want to teach art through computer and design media.

Since 1997, when Horton High School's art program was founded,Paul has provided students with a growing on-line resource of support materials, lessons, assignments, and rubrics. This site also hosts several galleries of student art.
The Horton Art Gallery Online features exemplars of student art & designs from grades 10 through 12 -- surveying the program since 1998. HAGO shows how students are making great art in traditional and computer based media.
