As the thanksgiving season approaches, the Parma Fire Department would like to offer some safety tips to ensure a safe and happy Thanksgiving for you and your family.

•	Keep your family and guests safe with working smoke detectors on every level of the house.
•	Overnight guests and family should be instructed on a fire escape plan.
•	Have a fire extinguisher available no more than 10 feet away from the stove on the exit side of the room. At least one 2-1/2-class ABC multi-purpose dry chemical extinguisher is recommended.
•	When cooking, avoid wearing loose clothing and jewelry that can catch pot handles causing spills.
•	Cook on back burners when possible and turn handles in so they don’t extend over the edge.
•	Never leave stove unattended. If you must leave, turn the stove off or have someone else watch it while you’re gone.
•	Keep Thanksgiving decorations and kitchen clutter away from sources of direct heat.

Turkey Deep Frying Safety Tips

Deep-frying turkeys are considered unsafe and are not recommended unless strict guidelines are followed. The Underwriters Laboratories has refused to certify any turkey deep-frying equipment. If you are going to deep fry, follow manufactures recommendations. Here are some of the guidelines.

•	Propane heated models should never be used indoors, in a garage, under a pavilion, or on a wooden deck.
•	Electric models even though state they are safe indoors, should also be used outside and use an extension cord rated for the type of fryer being used.
•	Make sure the cooker is on a flat surface. Many units tip over easily and start a fire or cause serious burns and therefore children and pets should always be kept away.
•	Don’t overfill with oil. Overflowing oil may start a fire. Place the turkey in slowly to avoid splashing.
•	Never put a partially frozen or wet turkey in the fryer. Water and oil don’t mix.
• Some fryers don’t have a thermostat and no fryer should ever be left
•	unattended. The oil may over heat and reach it’s flash point and ignite. Never heat oil over 375 degrees.
•	Wear long sleeve shirts, goggles, and have heavy-duty pot holders or gloves near by.
•	Keep all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby.
•	Remember the oil stays hot for hours after cooking and should be treated as such.
•	If using peanut oil to cook, make sure no one is allergic to peanuts. They may have a reaction
•	The Parma Fire Department would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving

Fire investigator Elliot Rodriguez was called to the scene and determined the cause of the fire was a child playing with a lighter. Estimated loss was twenty thousand. The resident stated that she smelled smoke on the first floor and then the first floor smoke detector sounded. There was no detector in the basement. Chief John French added that you should have a working smoke detector on every floor of the residents.

Lt Tom Tesmer stated that twenty firefighters from four companies responded and found a garage fully involved with fire as well as the second floor of the neighbor’s house. The cause is not yet known but investigators said it originated in the garage. The homeowner was getting up for work when he noticed the fire in his garage. Fortunately the neighbor was not home at the time. Lt. Tesmer stated Brooklyn Hts. and Seven Hills also assisted in the extinguishment. He also stated that it was difficult because they were dealing with two separate fires. There was also welding equipment in the garage fueling the fire and electrical wires down across the garage and above ground pool cause the pool side to rupture adding more danger to an already hazardous scene. One firefighter was injured and was treated and released. The estimated loss combined is approximately 170 thousand dollars.
