These pages are where I am going to talk about my knitting. It’s kept separate from my other entries, because it’s more of a niche topic.

My Ravelry page

Knitting podcasts
Knitwit
purldiving
It’s a Purl, Man
Stash and Burn
Sticks and String
The Knitting Cook
Knit2gether
Math4Knitters
Cast On
Changelings Knit and Stitch
Knit Science
I’m doing it predominantly in white, with some purplish yarn thrown in for accent. I have been trying to decide which blocks will be knit in color.

I made these diagrams in my presentation software to give me a rough idea of the appearances. It isn’t complete, however, because it doesn’t show that the knitting is going in different directions in different blocks. That is, the garter bumps run either horizontally or vertically.

I’m going with the bottom design. What do you think?

Thank goodness I did my research.

When the mercer measured my cardigan, off my body, she determined I needed a 65 cm zipper. That is almost 26”. When I got home I read some more about zippers and discovered most people do not use zippers that long. Even though I had lengthened my cardigan compared to the pattern, I don’t think my torso is that long.

There is a post by Grumperina about determining the correct length of zipper. I quickly laced up the cardigan with some extra yarn and a needle, while I was wearing it. It came out lopsided, but two things are clear. I only need a 60 cm zipper. The 65 cm zipper, when its bottom is held against the bottom of my cardigan, reaches to the middle of my neck. If only I had thought to do this at the store, but instead I ignored my worry that measuring on the table wasn’t going to be accurate.

So now I have a zipper that is way too long. I can fold it over, but it is not quite what I had in mind. The place I went to is in Brienz, and so I won’t be able to go there to exchange the zipper until next Saturday. I doubt she will be open on Monday, because it’s Pfingsten, but if she is I could go then. In the meantime I need to rip back several rows (the front of the neck is too high), do the short rows in the back, do the collar and zipper band, and then wash and block the cardigan. I suppose that’s enough to do while I wait to get the correct zipper.

Here are some more pictures. In the top photo you can see how crooked I basted the front, because the bobbles are so askew. I like the position of the bobbles on my right, so that is the length I’m aiming for when I block.

In the bottom photo you can see the armpit hole I still need to sew up. You can also see the waist shaping. I followed my body and the pattern as a guideline.

I think there may be an error in the pattern. I’m going to post about it at Ravelry to confirm the error, then I can contact the publisher.
I think there may be an error in the Entrelac sock pattern. I charted up the way I ended up making the heel, and that is the top chart.

The lower chart is as the pattern as written. As written, the pattern leaves two wraps, one on each side, not knit up to hide them. Perhaps I’m reading this wrong. Also, K29 on Row 2 unbalances the stitches unwrapped on each side of the heel.

These charts aren’t accurate in that they read from top to bottom, not bottom to top. The row counter on the left should help, though.

What do you think?

I’ve been trying to decide what I want to do. I’ve been interested in double knitting, but it seems that it will grow slowly. I still want to do the Stained Glass Scarf, though.

Last night I cast on for a hat with fair isle. I have a book with tons of charts in it, and it was so fun to go through the little black and white charts and imagine the designs in the different yarns in my stash.

I’m using very bulky yarn on size 17 needles. The brim is sand stitch. The main color is white, pictured above, and the contrast color is light blue. Here is the design:
The pattern is repeated all the way around. I’ve finished the color work, and only have a few more rows to do, but I am having absolutely the worst time getting the stitches off the cable and back onto the needle. Mike is going to make me some dpns, though!

This entry would have been better if I had a picture of the hat itself, but it’s better to update without it than not update at all.
