Textes: Jean-Louis GAILLEMIN
Edition: Réunion des musées nationaux, 2007

Blackwell is regarded as a pivotal building in the oeuvre of Baillie Scott and is the largest commission of the early phase of his career. Built as a grand holiday home, it represented a major opportunity to realise many of his ideas which, up until then, he had only produced in watercolours, drawings or imaginary schemes. It is all the more remarkable, and rare for a house of this period, that Blackwell has largely escaped any alterations and almost all of its original decorative features have survived.

Publisher: The Lakeland Arts Trust, 2005
www.blackwell.org.uk

Jacobsen’s teachers belonged to the first generation of modern architects, and as such they were capable of revising the school’s curriculum. Antiquity ceased to be the focus of stylistic and mimetic reference, although it was still studied for its symbolic value: the styles were no longer important, but classical proportion retained all of its relevance and interest. This attitude profoundly influenced the students. ... Jacobsen possessed that twofold virtue of the architects of his generation: the sensibility of knowing how to see and the ability to express what he saw supremely well, an indispensable combination in the world of architecture.

Author: Félix SOLAGUREN-BEASCOA
Editor: Jorgen Hegner Christiansen
Translation: Graham Thomson
Publisher: The Danish Architectural Press, 2002
