Plant Trees
•The work is outside.
•Sometimes it’s hot.
•Sometimes it’s cold.
•Sometimes it’s rainin’ out.
•The work is very repetitive - perhaps 2000 trees/day, the same thing over and over and over all day long and it’s the same again the next day.
•It’s pretty hard if you’re not physically fit.
•The load of trees is heavy.
•The planting bar is heavy.
•We frequently eat, occasionally sleep, and sometimes use the bathroom outdoors.
•Sometimes we work on steep slopes.
•Sometimes you have to scramble over logging debris or through briars.
•Sometimes there are very long periods of travel
•On a lot of sites you can’t send text messages.
•You will be away from home and the people you love for months.
•Sometimes the trees we plant are just going to get cut down anyways.
•At the end of the day you are too tired for your usual after-work activities.
•The work is outside.
•Sometimes it’s not too hot.
•Sometimes it’s not too cold.
•Sometimes it’s just kinda misty and nice.
•The rhythm of the work can make the time go by pretty quick as you can get in a zone and think Deep Thoughts - or shallow thoughts, I don’t care.
•After a short while you will be physically fit.
•Each tree planted is one closer to finishing the load.
•The planting bar makes the work as easy as possible.
•There is usually a lot of birds singing when you are outdoors.
•The view on the hills can be amazing.
•Sometimes we work in nice perfectly clear fields of pure soft sand.
•You get to see lots of obscure corners of the USA.
•You’ll never hear a phone ring on a lot of sites.
•You will be away from home and all the people you don’t like for months.
•Sometimes we are planting a site designed for the trees to stay forever.
•At the end of the day there is something very tangible you can show the world.
