GENERAL INFORMATION
Xmas Eve (Thursday): OFFICE & COURTS CLOSED AT 14:00
Xmas Day (Friday): OFFICE & COURTS CLOSED
Boxing Day (Saturday): OFFICE & COURTS OPEN AT 11:00 - Saturday Social from 14:00-17:00.
New Year's Eve (Thursday): OFFICE & COURTS CLOSED AT 14:00.
New Year's Day (Friday): OFFICE & COURTS OPEN AT 12:00 - New Year’s Day Social from 16:00-19:00.

MEMBER KEY HOLDERS!
Key holders may use courts 3 & 4 (Court 2 is not for general play) if they wish to do so. You can book courts for Xmas Day and News Year's Eve by calling the office otherwise its on a first come basis (Please limit your play to 2 hours). Bookings for Boxing Day & New Years day are as normal (Internet or Phone bookings).

Remember please lock the Gate(s) when you have finished.

SITP BOOK LAUNCH 24 October 2009

The Good Book Store in Belrose NSW held a special fundraising event for the Sydney Indigenous Tennis Program (SITP) on Saturday 24 October 2009. The event was a huge success, raising more than $600 which be put towards free tennis classes for Indigenous children in Redfern commencing in 2010.

The day was a re-launch of the biography ‘Burnum Burnum, a Warrior for Peace’ with the author, Marlene J Norst present to personally sign copies of the book. Burnum Burnum was the father of Lua De Burgh, the founder and coordinator of the SITP. 100% of the profits from books sold during the day will go to the program. Also present on the day was 2008 Aboriginal Elder of the Year, Lorraine McGee Sippel, the author of Mum, What’s a Half Caste and recent winner of a Deadly Award for Best Literature 2009.

Lua De Burgh from the SITP program was there to talk about the program as well as representatives from two of the program’s major partners - Matt Starr from Tennis NSW and Patrick Jensen and Sylvia DeAngelis from Jensen’s Tennis Centre.

Children present were also treated to free face painting and indigenous story telling by Jeanette Lyall, owner of Jumping Jelly Beans and didgeridoo playing with Indigenous Elder Alfred Coolwell.

The Sydney Indigenous Tennis Program will promote and encourage healthy lifestyles for Indigenous people through tennis. By providing positive Indigenous role models the SITP will foster a kinship between young and old, teachers and students alike. It will boost self-esteem and confidence through physical activity and provide free access to tennis for members of the community who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

The SITP comprises three elements:

• Training of Indigenous youth & adult tennis players as tennis coaches through Tennis Australia's internationally recognised certification programs
• Employment of Indigenous youth and adults as tennis coaches
• Free after-school tennis lessons and free tennis camps for Indigenous children aged 8-12 who reside in and around the inner-city communities of Sydney during the school holiday periods in partnership with other local organisations

Tennis NSW’s Community Tennis Division has assisted the SITP to gain seed funding from the City of Sydney Community Grants Program but much more is needed to ensure the program’s success. Free Classes and Holiday Camps will take place at Jensen’s Tennis Centre in Sydney. Any donations to the program can be made to the Redfern Aboriginal Medical Service and are tax deductible.

Another fundraising event will be held this Saturday 31st October from 10:00-17:00 on the ‘Block’ in Redfern.
