Why Sustainable?
I am so disappointed by the extractive industries and other big corporations and their crimes against nature, their crimes against humanity, that I chose to live without their so called luxuries. I want to learn and explore the options, create more options, find better solutions to the difficulties of the human experience. I don’t want to cut off my feet in order to buy a better hat-- and the way the world is going, it seems as insane and unreasonable as just that.
The WHY is a legitimate response to the way I see the world; I don’t like a lot of what I see, the waste, the greed, the plastic, the explosions happening in the mountains, the oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico or in Valdez or even in Ecuador. I don’t like the big fast roads cutting through everything and the huge equipment. I don’t like Christmas lights that can be seen from space. I don’t even like the constant hum of the refrigerator. I detest air conditioning and I do not like the whirl and buffeting of fans. I don’t like chlorine or flouride in my drinking or bathing water, I do not like street lights shining in my window, or city lights in offices that are obviously closed. I am saddened by over flowing trash cans and sewage systems, and humbled by landfills and the Pacific gyre. I don’t even like to defecate into clean water. For one, I don’t want to be a part of it, I don’t want to contribute to it, but mostly, I want to be part of an option. I know that thousands of people are living on a different world, filled with joy and the pleasures of the earth, and I’m joining them.
HOW??
I have to admit that sometimes I feel a bit overwhelmed, but little by little I am clarifying real values and priorities, putting healthy and sustainable routines into place, and developing alternative systems for fulfillment... solutions become obvious when I start asking the right questions-- and remembering that sustainable means running in the profit margin without exploiting others or the environment, prospering as a person within a set of ethical codes, being conscious, and feeling grateful, blessed and joyful.
SO, the how, I’m still discovering. One of the things I know I can do is the hard work. Somehow I grew up with work as a value, so I’m not ashamed to work, to get dirty, to get tired, to be strong and not to own any leisure clothing. I have never been bored in my life, and I love to study, and learn by doing. I love working with my hands and with my whole body, and especially when I feel I have the power of the Universe flowing through me, doing It’s work through me. I get absolutely high in my work meditations.
The other part of How is through quiet meditation, and breathing. I try to stay Present as much as possible to pull on this power of Being. It helps me to understand what is really happening and to differentiate when information is true or part of a big ploy to undermine me and my generation. I feel I can tell if my path is true only when I meditate on a regular basis. If I find I am spending most of my thinking time in the future, in desire, or in the past, nostalgic, I start to miss moments, and find myself watching time slip away from me. It is very important for me to engage my life fully, one moment at a time, to grasp it and consume it completely. It is part of who I am and part and parcel of how I live, how I need to live.

WHY, HOW and WHAT I am doing here...
The way that Americans are living, and have lived during my lifetime is appalling to me, and the results are catastrophic and devastating in my eyes.
I feel it is my need and my destiny to find another way, or many other ways, to live in a way that is kind and sustainable, and is in some way extraordinary and satisfying.
