... Women’s Professional Soccer

Welcome to the blog you likely accidentally found that tells the story of Women’s Professional Soccer in the United States from the eyes of a no-name player and small-town kid. The little-known league that debuted in 2009 is largely set apart from the glitz and glamour that seems to distinguish similar professional athletic leagues in the U.S. The humble players who represent Women’s Professional Soccer are hardly glorified superstars boasting fame and fortune, but rather are a handful of women that come together to create a collaborative story more fittingly entitled The Lifestyles of the Not-so Rich or Famous.

This league and the story it so seamlessly crafts is about so much more than a bunch of chicks who run around on 9,600 yards of grass chasing after goals and championships. The stadiums that house these players do more than provide entertainment to a modest few thousand soccer junkies. If you could step inside this world for one day, you’d find women who daily sacrifice and bleed and love with every ounce of themselves to give breath to the dream of the little girl who would give anything to become one of them.  If you listen closely enough to the low roar of the crowds, you’ll hear the buzz of the history created that we can’t afford to again lose.

With the collapse of our first professional league in 2003, then called the WUSA, women in sport took a huge step backwards. We are lucky enough to see its rebirth in the WPS but can hardly yet say it’s here to stay. I hope to provide some stories that make you laugh, make you think or just simply provide a way to distract you from what you should really be doing. Perhaps then you’ll join me in promoting this, the WPS - an achievement in history that gives athletes a hope and a home in a place previously designated impossible.
